Just as beautifully crafted as the first volume! This second book contains the conclusion of the last arc of the first book AND all of the next arc...the Motorball Arc! There's also some extra gag manga strips included at the end of this volume which was a nice surprise and of course more detailed notes and name changes to characters, locations and various terms (gotta love the updated translations).Overall another great buy, can't wait til Volume 3 where things really start to get really crazy in the Scrapyard...
What can I say without spoiling the book? That it’s great, a must-have, a fantastic addition to the Alita story. That the characters continue to be astonishingly real and human, with real and human motivations. That means they’re benevolent and caring as well as dark and selfish and vindictive, and both sides often found within the same character. There are genuine heroes and genuine devils, and even Alita herself--as much as we care about and root for her--can be a stubborn brat. In this book you’ll find the resolution to Hugo/Yugo’s story and the next chapter of Alita’s life. My only real complaint about this edition itself is that they failed to provide the gorgeous colored pages found in the first Deluxe Edition volume, and that made me feel a little cheated since I was so looking forward to it.That’s my spoiler-free review, the rest of this is going to be absolutely riddled with spoilers as I critique and comment on the story. After the end of the Yugo arc, Alita ran away from her home with Doc Ido, away from that sector of the Scrapyard. The new arc opens up with Ido, ragged and emotionally drained, searching the streets for his missing pseudo-daughter. As he passes an alley he witnesses the beginning of a rape in progress, pauses for a moment, then moves on with a shrug saying that it’s none of his concern. That illustrates how emotionally affected he is over Alita’s disappearance, since he would never allow such a thing to happen before. Thankfully he spots a pipe he can use as a weapon, thinks for a moment more, and returns to the alley to put a stop to it. That scene is fantastic. I love how Ido is so ambivalent and subdued, not really caring about what’s going on even as he risks his life to fight these rapists.Skipping ahead a bit, the girl he saved leads him to finding Alita, who joined a Battle Ball arena and became a rookie rising star in this brutal blood sport. Ido calls out to Alita, and their eyes meet--with Alita having only a scathing glare for him.Alita wants to forget everything about her time in the scrapyard so far. Looking at Ido only reminds her of everything she lost, and so she wants nothing to do with him… and yet, she loves Ido and is immensely grateful to him for everything he did for her, and she feels overwhelming guilt for spurning him like that. That’s why I love Yukito Kishiro’s characters, that’s why I say they’re so incredibly human. It’s because they’re complex, they want different things, feel different things, that are often in conflict with each other. Humans are messy and conflicted beings, and he manages to capture that in a way most authors don’t, especially in shounen battle manga.Ido’s reaction to Alita spurning him is another perfect example. The girl he saved in the alley turns out to be the sister of the Battle Ball grand champion, whose health is failing thanks to the very medical enhancement that makes him so unstoppable. This enhancement was done using technology from Tipheras (or Zalem, if you’re wrong like this translation). Since Ido is also a doctor from the Floating City With Two Names, he can help keep the champion healthy--and he leverages this lucky opportunity to enact a plan to have Alita crushed in Battle Ball so that she returns to him. Again, real, messy character motivations. It gets even better when Ido and Alita’s tumultuous feelings interact again. Alita and her Battle Ball agent are walking through the market enjoying their day, and Alita is beating herself up over how guilty she feels about Ido. Then by a stroke of luck, they bump into the Champion, who used to be rivals with the agent before he had to retire from the arena. Ido is there with him, and he starts acting like a real ***hole to Alita, acting like they’ve never met and saying how there’s no way she could ever beat the champ.Suddenly all of Alita’s guilt is swallowed up by her wave of rage, and she challenges the champ to a contest and puts her life at stake. Ido’s selfish feelings fueled Alita’s stubborn nature and in an instant, everything spiraled out of control in a direction Ido never wanted at all. It’s such perfect drama! It’s exactly something that happens to people all the time in the real world, but taken to an extreme because of the setting. There’s a lot of plot in this book and I don’t want to summarize the whole thing, so I’ll just skip forward to comment on the climactic battle between Alita and the champ. The whole Alita series has always had a strange mix of technobabble and mysticism, which makes its first appearance here in the form of the champ using Chi. It pushes against your suspension of disbelief at first, but you’ll quickly acclimate to the new normal, and it leads to a really epic final conclusion as the champ and Alita square off one on one in battle, the champ fighting even while his body and brain disintegrate because of his disease, and in that final moment before his death he finally pushes beyond all limitations into a level of power and master he’d never achieved before. It’s difficult to follow along logically, but if you just accept it all and go with the ride it’s a really awe-inspiring moment that’ll send your heart soaring with emotion.
While no doubt a way to capitalize on the new movie coming out it doesn't change the fact that this manga is an all time classic for a reasonA little pricy yes, would have even preferred something paperback, but even with that you can tell effort WAS put into this. The pages are nice and glossy as well as bright, the cover is high quality and solid, and of course most every aspect of the story itself is good to great. My one gripe is this volume is full of rather disposable characters, they're not bad but they clearly don't have as much going for them as Alita or the doctor.Regardless of that, still a great read
Having raced through the first two volumes I am eagerly awaiting volume three but not so eagerly the movie based on these titles which has now been pulled from summer release and pushed to Christmas which is never a good sign. Rodriguez from the previews has made a serious attempt to duplicate Alita’s world and the battle angel herself but something about it all seems off. Alita’s world is dark and dangerous, trashy and beautiful all at the same time thanks to the pen of her creator and that look and feeling are well on display in these first two restorations. A newcomer to the series like myself is impressed by its passion and its humanity—and breathless with its action. Alita will beguile you with her look, challenge you with her grit, and reward you with stories well told, obstacles well surmounted, and emotion well spent.
Upon receiving this volume of Alita I didn’t immediately dive into it and had left it unfinished for several weeks. I was determined to get back into it because the 3rd volume’s release was around the corner. I sat down one mid-morning (maybe 9ish) on my front lawn soaking up some warmth from the sun and sipping on coffee as I found myself really getting into the motorball arc. I finished reading through the book at around 11am. I just lost myself in the story. Such a great series so far.
Very pleased with the order and is exactly as described.
