A recent workplace development course entitled " Effective Workplace Consulting" led me to this book. The return on investment was invaluable within the first chapter. Block confirmed that I was performing out of role and taught me to consult with peers and not take on their work. Within the first chapter, I have redefined workplace project roles and tasks, moved to 1:1 meetings with project team members and everyone thanked me as I gingerly gave them their work back. Block prepared me for any resistance which led to better meeting preparation...within the first chapter. I am now acting as a consultant opposed to "manager". My supervisor noticed the change and tendered a compliment on my meeting management within a week of my beginning this book. This book made the difference!.I should have read this book two years ago for my current role and 15 years ago as I started in my career. You cannot afford to not read this book. Personally and professionally Block will show you that you may be acting out of role, futilely exerting energy and setting yourself up for failure. I am now a Peter Block fan.How well do you manage resistance when purusing your own needs when consulting --- ask Peter BlockHow well do you garner committment from others - ask Peter BlockWhat should you define in your contract - ask Peter BlockHow do you determine if you are "effective" - ask Peter BlockWhat is the discovery model for problem solving that you can use time after time - ask Peter Block

The man speaks the truth. As a professional consultant I was intrigued to see how much of my reality matched up with Peter Block's and it is spot on. I really enjoyed his candor and truth in the struggles and opportunities to help clients make a big difference in their lives. It's a humble profession and Block's advice and system can help eliminate many of the pitfalls in not having a repeatable process. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

A number of years ago, I found myself without a job for the first time in my adult life. At 40, this was scary until I woke up one morning, created a subchapter-S corporation and became a consultant. This book, along with others by Peter Block, was a significant help in getting started and having the confidence to persevere for two years independently. Now I'm a consultant in a big four firm and the things I learned from this book still ring true.

Having read over a hundred books in the fields of organization development, change management, and consulting, this book has had a tremendous influence on my practice. It is probably one of my top 10 of all time.Block does not talk about the technical aspects of consulting, but focuses on the way of being with the client and ourselves. This is as it should be. After all, we got selected for the job for possessing technical skills. That being said, Block advocates a partnership with the client for a joint discovery of the "real problem" and the "solution". This is in contrast to the traditional expert and the pair of hands models of consulting.

Flawless Consulting is a classic in books on consulting, yet I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Flawless Consulting is a good and useful book that will definitively improve your consulting perspectives and skills, yet I had expected more. The parts of the book related to consultant authenticity was excellent, but the parts on consulting phases and contracting felt mechanic. Perhaps I'm just turned off by the phrases 'phases' (which often contradicts with a more continuous perspective) and 'contracts' (which often replace deep trust). The author did mention contract is more of a verbal/mental contract, but the word comes with a lot of baggage. The book is about 350 pages and contains 19 chapters plus some appendixes. It promises it is shorter than previous editions by moving more content online. The first few chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. The first chapter looks at the definition of consulting and introduces the 5 phase consulting process: 1) Entry & Contracting, 2) Discovery and Dialogue, 3) Analysis and the Decision to Act, 4) Engagement and Implementation, and 5) Extension, Recycle or Termination. The rest of the book follows these phases is chronological sequence. The second chapter introduces the collaborative approach to consulting that the book takes. As a consultant, you collaborate with a client on 50/50 basis to together help the client improve. The third chapter introduces the concept of authenticity to consulting, staying true and congruent to your own feelings and intuition and trying to truly collaborate on equal basis to resolve problems. These three concepts: 1) consulting phases, 2) collaborative relation, and 3) authenticity form the basis for the rest of the book.I won't summarize the rest of the chapters as the follow the consulting concepts in the order of the phases. The phases made me uncomfortable though as I've always viewed consulting as a more iterative and continuous activity where there is gradual discovery, decision making and implementation going on all the time. The strict approach that the book took to these phases felt very unnatural to me, but it might have to do with the different types of consulting. Some might be purely project/goal basis and some might be more continuous. The collaborative and authenticity concepts would fit extremely well with a continuous and iterative view on consulting though, so in that sense, I felt that was a missed opportunity. All that said, the book is a full with useful advise on how to improve your consulting skills. It is definitively be useful for any person in a consultative role and would recommend picking this up. Good.

This came to my notice as a consulting class e-book; I purchased a hardcopy after reading the first chapter. I highly recommend it to ANYONE especially if you are looking to learn how to communicate better in ANY situation; but especially when you are communicating from a lesser status position (such as at work; with superiors or customers). As for consulting itself; this is by far the best advice you could ever get; not just for yourself but for anyone you may consult for and their organization.

This is such a fun book! We Love reading this with our daughter. We are huge fans of Lois Lowry so I was thrilled to see she had kids chapter books. I'm so sick of chapter books about magical kittens and perky puppies!

I use this story to help teach writing elements to 2nd graders! Love it.The boys like it, too.

I've always read this to my second graders. This year I'm in fourth grade. I saw a fifth grade teacher recommend this. I was hesitant since it's on about a third grade reading level. It was the best week. We laughed so hard together. They caught on much quicker. I recommend this for EVERYONE between 6-106 years old.

Great story of a confident strong minded girl whose story telling ability surpasses that of many adults. This is a great book to incorporate into the classroom. It demonstrates the elements of a story and emphasizes the importance of the details that make a story great.

I teach fifth and sixth grade language arts and have used this book for the past three years as an introduction to our writing lessons. The kids love it and they never forget what Gooney Bird teaches them about writing...always have a good beginning, middle, and end ... tell absolutely TRUE stories with interest-catching titles... and the main character is always "right smack in the middle of things"! Gooney Bird has been a great help also when the kids in my class, just like Gooney's classmates, start to get off track and everyone insists on telling a "dog or cat" story. I simply remind the class that it's beginning to sound like a "Gooney Bird" moment! They all know exactly what I mean and we are quickly back on track! Thanks, Gooney, for being such an important "member" of my language arts classes! We love you! (Can't wait to get the sequel...Gooney Bird and the Room Mother!)

My students loved this book. The only part they did not like had nothing to do with the book. I would read this everyday when they were getting ready to go home and it was only about 5 minutes every day. They begged me to buy some more of these books.

Hilarious. 6 YO can’t quite read it all on her own just yet - but. - is more than happy to listen and she reads the parts that she can. More involved than a Branches Book, but holds attention VERY well.

Good story along with an English lesson. The 2nd grade grand should enjoy this and help her to remember her lessons.

The Morville Hours: The Story of a Garden, by Katherine Swift

From Publishers Weekly

Swift, a former London Times gardening columnist, invites readers to slow down, taste the fresh fruit and sniff the blooming flowers. Entwining gardening with natural and local history, family memories, garden visitors like insects, animals and people, and religious traditions, Swift explores the cycles of the seasons and life while providing a fresh breath of country air. Was quince responsible for the Trojan War as well as Adam and Eve's fall from Paradise? Garden tidbits, such as pear trees living for 250 years and damson plums having provided the dye for British military uniforms, are abundant. But more so, Swift offers an exploration of the world as seen through the eyes of a longtime gardener. The months in the garden are explored alongside the medieval Catholic book of hours; days and seasons cycle with Swift's narratives of garden design, Roman history, astronomy and brain chemistry. Swift's meditative prose should appeal to gardeners (armchair or soil-based) and nature lovers alike with its invitation to pause for reflection. From Booklist

Taking possession of Morville, a centuries-old Shropshire estate, Swift had to prove to England's National Trust that she was equal to the task of restoring the massive gardens to a state that would both honor their venerable history and reflect their natural beauty. In truth, there was no one more capable of acknowledging a heritage that included gentry and clergy, royalty and paupers. A born naturalist with a keen eye, Swift delved into the property's past with the emotional sensitivity of a poet and the solemn tenacity of a historical scholar. Season by season, Swift chronicles the changes she envisioned and accomplished, using the monastic Book of Hours as both her guide and touchstone. Though her reflections might begin with the memory of a moonlight stroll down a snow-covered path, Swift is quick to position these personal revelations within the timeless context of Morville’s ancestry. With rhapsodic eloquence and passionate devotion, Swift imparts the rewards and discoveries inherent in such a multifaceted commitment to time and place. --Carol Haggas

This is the last of the nature books (WIND IN THE ASH TREE, A SMALL COUNTRY LIVING GOES ON, WILD HARES AND HUMMINGBIRDS, and THE MAGIC APPLE TREE) I bought for summer reading. I enjoyed the latter two, I loved both the Jeanine McMullen memoirs, but I left this for last, and it truly was the icing on the cake. Let me reiterate again that I didn't inherit the Italian gene for gardening; I don't like to work in the dirt, I hate bugs, worms make me queasy, and I hate being out in the sun. But I love reading memoirs of this sort, especially when the author has a way with words as does Swift.Basing her memoir on a medieval Book of Hours (a religious work that delegated what prayers and activities should be performed at certain hours in a monastery—Vigils, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and, at the end of the day, Compline), Swift recounts her years restoring the Dower House garden at Morville Hall in Shropshire, England. Part history of the Morville area, part garden redesign, and part memoir of coming to terms with her lopsided upbringing and past relationship with her parents, this is a beautifully written account of her days duplicating the different gardens that would have graced the Dower House in different eras of English history: a traditional knot garden, a cloister garden, a turf maze, a wild garden, and more. Her description of the flowers, the plants, the seasons are all exquisite. A glorious pleasure to read, especially for those who love nature and gardening (or just, like me, enjoy reading about it).

There are how-to garden books and lavishly photographed garden books, and then there's a third category: the offbeat, personal account of a person's garden that rises to the level of "garden literature", a delight that owes its strength to wonderful writing. Katherine Swift was clearly aiming at "garden literature" in "The Morville Hours". I think she tried too hard. She chose to tell her tale about becoming the chief gardener at Morville, a British National Trust property in Shropshire, by wrapping it within her account of the medieval Book of Hours, which made it heavy sledding for me.

The Morville Hours is a meditation on gardening, history, one's place and time. It is beautifully written. It's not a gardening book but a gardening book of the soul and place. I love some of her descriptions of breathing the air, and tilling the soil that generations have breathed and tilled. Perhaps we are too solution conscious to stop, stand still, and look at the snow by moonlight. If you like these things, I highly recommend this book to you. I am buying 5 as gifts. I would recommend the following: Clear Mind, Wild HeartThe Elegance of the HedgehogThe Wild Braid: A Poet Reflects on a Century in the Garden][[ASIN:0312427808 The Housekeeper and the Professor: A Novel

I confess I am American and not a botanist. This lovely story had elements that were tough going for me and I gave up after 25 pages. The author gives long lists of plants, for example. There is much detail of historical traditions in monasteries (the Hours) including the Latin names. The style was repetitive. Sigh. Then she tells the enchanting tale of walking the garden at midnight, New Year's Eve. I think I'd have loved just those stories.

Wonderful story of a garden and how the author brought it back to life. In my opinion, however, she spent way too much time complaining about what a tough childhood she had. We all have our problems and I didn't buy the book to read about hers.

I can't whether I like it or dislike it. My expectation, being a gardener, was that the book would focus on gardening. I have found that it is an amalgam of autobiography, intense history, the meaning of the sacred hours translated into months and gardening. I am a fast reader, but, this book is so dense, without a common thread, that I am muddling through it. That being said, and not pejoratively, it is a worthwhile read.

I only got about half way through. It is really not what I expected. The history of her farm goes on and on.

As with all great books, this one is about ....everything. Katherine Swift weaves the narrative thread offered by the annual cycles of the liturgical "Book of Hours" into a skein of history about her garden, her life, her part of the world. It is beautiful, enchanting, enlivening.

The Divine Harold Bloom (as he uses the term for Oscar Wilde) here defends the Western Canon, and while so doing became the recipient of much undeserved criticism, from the likes of so-called New Historicists, gender theorists, Marxist interpreters, and devotees of the School of Resentment. Battle worn and unyielding in his belief in literature that matters, Bloom here is indefatigable. In this, a pillar of western literary criticism, Bloom lucidly lays out his argument for the Canon. I wont defend the Canon here in this review, Bloom does that way better than I ever could, but I will say I appreciate his heroism. I will relate to you that during my undergraduate and graduate pursuits in the field of English Literature at an esteemed University, I can honestly say that the Canon does indeed need a champion. A reader of classical literature since I was a child, I experienced shock and dismay when much of my coursework was taken up with studying literature that was focused on due to "cultural significance" without regard to aesthetic beauty or literary quality. Without naming names, when one goes into a course of study that one hopes will incorporate Shakespeare, Milton, Dante and Cervantes, or the gods of the field, I ended up enmeshed in courses that focused on cultural/socio-political fetishes, with topical, and therefor irrelevant, importance, to call it that. Twenty years later, I'm still reeling from classes focused on comic books and political pamphlets. So, as always, I stuck to what I deem important-literature that has universal significance-Joyce, Becket, Proust, Kafka, Faulkner, Lawrence and Crane for the moderns; Shakespeare, Milton, Blake, Shelley, Dickens, Austen, Goethe, Mann, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Whitman, Melville, Hawthorne and James. Bloom, here as elsewhere, is a great guide for those of us who, due to the disintegration of the Academy, are forced into autodidactism. For those of us increasingly rare beings who search for where "wisdom might be found" in those authors where the muse speaks most evidently, this book is a great and treasured resource. Of the many accomplishments of this gem, Bloom allows us to become acquainted with these great writers and why they matter. One of the great regrets of my life is not having had the opportunity of surveying a course taught by Mr. Bloom at Yale or NYU, or better yet, sitting down and having a beer with the man and discussing poetry. I solace myself by reading his works incessantly and watching lectures and interviews on youtube (forgive me Mr. Bloom, I am as technologically adverse as you are, but I have to do what I have to do). This book, along with the Invention of the Human and The Daemon Knows, along with his other works, are my bibles in life as I unwaveringly search for wisdom in books, plays and poetry that have enriched my life and inner being immeasurably. Harold Bloom has had an incalculable impact on me as a living room scholar and on me as a person. Harold Bloom is, and will always be, a treasure great to behold.

I'm actually still trying to understand what Harold Bloom is saying about Shakespeare in some of his other works. I don't have that nailed yet, but his discussion of Dante and Don Quixote is really helpful.

A major part of the book reviews specific literature and compares and contrasts it with other works. This is very good reading and helps in selecting books to read. But, in my opinion, the list of literature in Bloom's canon is even more significant. I would not have known that some of the listed works were part of the great literature. And, the list is a good reminder of all that the great literature includes - even if it is Bloom's opinion. Given Bloom's background, I think his opinion as to which literature is the most significant deserves our attention.

The first few pages were bound crookedly. Luckily it is only like this to the copyright page. Two of said pages are also stuck together. However, having said that, so far the actual content of the book is excellent. I have yet to finish it and will try to write a review once I have.

Love him or hate him (I love him), Harold Bloom is one of the great readers of all time. He has personally read more widely and more deeply than some entire towns. It is certainly not necessary to agree with him to benefit from his insights and analyses. This book examines the notion that there was a body of writing that was central to Western Culture. Each generation read these works and was taught about these works as an essential part of the transmission of that cultural to each rising generation to keep it alive. It not only enriched the lives of those so educated, it benefited the world because of the great values and life giving force of the rich ideas they contained. He notes how this notion has not only been rejected by recent generations of academics, but is now almost unknown in the living generations of people who would constitute Western Culture if they knew what it actually was.He opens with an elegy to the Canon. The book is worth reading just for this essay. The next section examines authors of the Aristocratic Age. All Bloom readers know he is a worshipper of Shakespeare (he calls himself a Bardolater). He opens with an essay titled "Shakespeare: Center of the Canon". This section also includes essays on Dante, Chaucer, Cervantes (another Bloom favorite), Montaigne & Molière, Milton, Samuel Johnson, and Goethe. An impressive list, no?The next section is the Democratic Age and includes essay son Wordsworth & Jane Austen, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Dickens, George Eliot, Tolstoy, and Ibsen. The Chaotic age follows and includes Freud vis à vis Shakespeare, Proust, Joyce, Woolf, Kafka, Borges, and Beckett.Obviously, none of these sections is comprehensive. These are only representative writers of the periods Bloom is discussing with us. The final section is Cataloging the Canon and begins with an Elegiac Conclusion. This essay urges that he is not offering us a lifetime reading plan. Rather, he offers us a way to read. He offers advice on how to immerse yourself in certain kinds of reading. He urges us to seek better writing and to develop a taste that will lead us away that which is not worth reading because it takes you away from that which is. He talks about how to develop the taste of a good Critic rather than spewing the politics of resentment or being numb to the great and good.Bloom then provides extensive lists of works from each of the three periods. You may like to read some things on the list and not others. As I said, agreeing with Bloom is really not the point. It is being exposed to what is worthwhile in our cultural tradition and getting good grounding in why it is important that is critical. Our emphasis on practical education and vocational training has left most of us with insufficient time in school to indulge our cultural education. We have to do the work more or less on our own. This book can be a real help in making headway in that part of our personal education. Thanks, Professor Bloom!

Dense with confusing metaphor but interesting. Bloom is idiosyncratic in his viewpoint - not your old English teacher. Deeply read, full of energy and enthusiasm. Not a relaxing read.

Review

"Jacobs's book opens the door, offering a meticulous introduction to the art form and welcoming readers to have a seat and stay a while.... It's from this insider's perspective that Jacobs is able to offer an all-encompassing guided tour behind the curtain, then circling back to the auditorium where the balletomane, the occasional fan and the newcomer sit side by side as they interpret the performance according to their individual experiences and beliefs."―Misty Copeland, New York Times Book Review"A lively guide, for the newcomer and enthusiast alike, to an art form that is meticulously controlled yet ever-changing."―Wall Street Journal"Our dance critic Laura Jacobs is the best writer on ballet there is. So you can bet that her new book, Celestial Bodies: How to Look at Ballet, will be the best primer on ballet there is."―New Criterion"In 12 chapters Jacobs provides readers a whirlwind tour of ballet, effortlessly weaving together history, technique, music, choreography, drama."―Ballet Focus "Whether you are budding balletomane or a lifelong dancer, Celestial Bodies will inspire you to look more closely at our beloved art form-and fall more deeply in love with it."―Pointe Magazine"This sparkling, eloquent book will make going to the ballet a richer experience for both the novice and the passionate." ―Haglund's Heel"Lyrical and accessible...Jacobs brings over two decades' worth of her experience as a dance critic to this elegant introduction to all aspects of the art form: its cultural history, the development of its aesthetics, its famous works and epic personalities."―Times Literary Supplement"Written like a true dancer...It's from this insider's perspective that Jacobs is able to offer an all-encompassing guided tour behind the curtain, then circling back to the auditorium where the balletomane, the occasional fan and the newcomer sit side by side as they interpret the performance according to their individual experiences and beliefs."―New York Times Book Review"According to the artist and critic Alexandre Benois, 'Ballet is perhaps the most eloquent of all spectacles.' This book is one of the most eloquent ever written about it."―Booklist"The author ably explains the technical aspects of ballet, as when she explains that turnout's 'symmetrical torque in the hips engages energy and concentrates it' and in her beautiful description of pas de deux: 'a form of close-up, the theatrical equivalent of the camera's lavish gaze.' 'They're doing choreography,' Danny Kaye sang in White Christmas. As Jacobs demonstrates, however, ballet is so much more."―Kirkus Reviews

Full disclosure: Laura Jacobs and I have been talking dance (and theater and music…) for decades now. So, don’t expect me to be impartial—not when I’m quoted, listed in her index, and most handsomely singled out in the acknowledgments. That’s not to say I don’t have an honest opinion, so if you’re interested, read on.If the subtitle leads you to expect a primer for curious beginners, you’re off the mark. Yes, with its meditations on the implication of ballet’s five positions, the arabesque, and other fundamentals, Laura’s guide will give you a worthwhile grounding. But this is not, as it were, the work of a grammarian. Laura is one of the viewers who are all there, thinking all the time, constantly revising spontaneous impressions. There are those who will say (some customer reviewers have done so) that Laura overwrites. Sure enough, if a single metaphor or simile per topics exhausts your tolerance, you may think so, too. At one level, her centrifugal enchaînements of free association are the very opposite of analysis: images arc through her mind like meteor showers off a disco ball, scattering every which way yet within their own broad band of harmony. At her best, she achieves by accretion of detail the depth of focus more conventionally arrived at by reduction, by stripping away. One other thing: Laura is the least doctrinaire of balletomanes, unwilling to stake out absolutist positions. You may want to see your classics in the Platonic purity (if that’s what it is) of their original performances. Or perhaps you prefer to let them evolve performance by performance, season by season (as indeed they must, in the flow of time). So be it. Laura has her crushes, her predilections, her changes of heart. By example, she invites new aficionados to develop their own.

What makes this book so special is that while we distantly respect and admire ballerinas, we secretly misunderstand them. Jacobs has changed all that. In CELESTIAL BODIES, she takes years of knowledge, mixing her words with anecdotes, interviews and technical definitions to dissect a delicate dance form. This poetic overview about tutus and pirouettes is ultimately very feminist, very much about women taking an art form and making it THEIRS.Like a curtain call at the end of Swan Lake...Jacobs deserves a standing ovation on pointe...and a throw of roses!

As a person who's only been to the ballet once (The Nutcracker), I found this book to be the perfect introduction to the world of ballet. It gives the novice an inside look at its history, definitions, and the dancers who bring the story to the stage. I found myself on Youtube (repeatedly, I might add) looking up various ballets and dissecting the music, choreography, and the dancers' individual styles. This is a MUST read for anyone interested in learning about ballet and its origins. After reading this, you will want to buy tickets to the next ballet in town!

Too talky. Seems slightly contrived; for purposes of selling a book? Not of celestial import, to me.

Celestial Bodies is a beautifully written book about ballet. Anyone from a ballet expert to a complete novice can read and learn from it. Laura Jacobs is a talented wordsmith as well as an expert on ballet; she makes the subject come alive. This book is worth reading and savoring.

If you studied or really understand Classical Ballet, you will find this knowledgeable and accurate book to be another lesson in itself. There is always more to learn, and this book provides excellent insights.

I've become interested in contemporary ballet in just the last few years and wanted to know more about it. This book taught me a lots about the aims of ballet and its history. I've read it twice and know I will go back again many times to particular chapters. Here and there it becomes a little lyrical and poetic for my taste but show the true passion of the author for ballet.
