The word “stoic” is one that gets tossed around a lot. However, not many know what it means or how it relates to the philosophical school of Stoicism. George Tanner’s book Stoicism: A Detailed Breakdown of Stoicism Philosophy and wisdom from the Greats: A Complete Guide to Stoicism does an excellent job of explaining the philosophy and history of Stoicism. For those who may have anxiety over reading a philosophy book, let your fears be quelled. Tanner writes in a way that is easy to understand and he makes sure to thoroughly explain key terms and individuals. Tanner is almost casual at times relating the philosophies to himself and the reader. This element makes the book incredibly engaging and compelling. Overall, I walked away from the book feeling enlightened and intrigued with the philosophy and this is a testament to Tanner’s writing; he crafted a text that is not only interesting but also lays out an accessible school of thought/lifestyle for the reader to learn and apply to their own lives.

Since college, I have never been fan of philosophy. When posed with, “Why are we here?” My inevitable response has always been, “We are. Why waste time asking why? Go do something.” And I did. Recent enforced leisure time has had me re-reading the classics, and I decided to take some of my downtime to work this into my virtual pile of books to read. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it.Mr. Tanner does an excellent job with his timeline, beginning with the roots of philosophy in ancient Greece and some history, before his big segue into morality. With definitions that are easy to understand, a plethora of examples, and a section on practical, personal application of stoicism in the modern world, it is easy to see that this book is deserving of the description, “the complete guide.”

Like a lot of people, I’ve always wanted to read more philosophy, but I just didn’t have the time. I’ve even tried to crack open Marcus Aurelius’s famous “Meditations,” but I just couldn’t get through it. It’s tough to read something written thousands of years ago. Enter this book. "Stoicism: A Detailed Breakdown of Stoicism Philosophy and Wisdom from the Greats: A Complete Guide To Stoicism” by George Tanner does a fantastic job aggregating various famous stoic philosophic tenets. The book covers the origins of stoicism thousands of years back, the circumstances that produced it, and some of the famous stoics. Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus are some of the big name you might remember from history class. “Stoicism” does a really good job unpacking some quotes from Meditations and other famous stoic work. It can be tough to understand what Marcus Aurelius was referring to with something, but the book makes it easy to understand. If you’re looking to dive into stoicism, this book is a fantastic resource.

Stoicism by George Tanner is about the philosophical teaching of stoicism, practiced by Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. According to Tanner, stoicism is a practice of attending to moral living by using wisdom and being in tune with nature. Tanner tells the story of stoicism’s founder, Zeno of Cyprus, who due to a loss of his sailing income, turned to philosophy to explain the 180 degree change in his life. The book is written as a historical document outlining the birth of stoicism and its practice in Western culture, while at the same time, teaching the tenants of its philosophy in clear, everyday English. If you are looking for a new way to look at the world, this book may just be the answer for you.

First of all, it is self published, and that is immediately evident when you open the book as it looks like it was put together by a high schooler who doesn't read; huge, awkward margins, the paragraphs are written like an email with no indentations and skipping a line to indicate a new paragraph, and force justification rather than normal justification so sometimes there's huge gaps between words to fill out a line. The writing is difficult to read and I found a factual inaccuracy within minutes of starting to read it, where it stated that Zeno and Alexander the great were born the same year, yet it followed this by "around 336 BCE." My first thought was "how do you know it was the same year if you are saying 'around' rather than a specific year," so a quick Google search revealed that not only were they burn different years, but neither of them were born in 336 BCE.Do not but this book. You will get ripped off and be very disappointed. I bought it thinking it'd be a good introduction to stoicism for some of my friends, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody.

One of the few regrets that I have had is that through my years of education that I have never truly delved into the subject of stoicism. That's why it was so refreshing to come across Stoicism: A Detailed Breakdown of Stoicism Philosophy and Wisdom from the Greats: A Complete Guide To Stoicism and have a nice solid grasp of the subject. The book is written by George Tanner and is a nice way for anyone curious about the subject to learn about it without having to take a college course. Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy that was later adopted by the Romans as a way of living. During those times of Greece, religion and philosophy went hand and hand so stoicism was not just a subject that people discussed but an ideology that they followed. While the philosophy is quite complicated, the book does give an excellent concise definition and explanation. There are plenty of chapters that break stoicism down and even connects it to other topics. By the end, we learn the intricate history and even how it connects to topics like psychology. Tanner does a wonderful job at explaining a complicated subject and has made the topic readily accessible to the mainstream.
