I have read several books which I thought would appeal only to a select audience. This book is one of them.I am a student of WWII Europe and in that regard I actively look for books on that period. I found this book interesting in its approach that of a series of interviews of German military men who were involved in the D Day invasion. The stories they tell to the interviewer are informative of their involvement from various jobs they held. Their stories include some gritty accounts of destruction and death and injury to their countrymen, but none of this is what I'd consider gratuitous.I don't re tell story lines in my reviews, but there was one account I found most interesting. It had been speculated that when the invasion from the Allies came it would be from Calais and not Normandy the reason being that Calais had a port which would facilitate the off loading of equipment such a tanks, etc, whereas Normandy was a beach head. For that reason formations were very heavily built around Calais with both armament, and soldiers while Normandy was not as heavily fortified. There's no question that the German command was not amply fortified at Normandy. It was not. That it was fortified as well as it was was a testament to Rommel. The stories told by the German men are what I call stories from "3 feet from the action". Typically, we read about the war from either side but from "30,000 feet". In other words from the command level, i.e. mass troop movements, etc.For that reason this account was so different, The interviewer was always conciliatory to the story teller, always inquiring but never confrontational. He got the "best" of their involvement from the human perspective.I have read "Letters from Iwo JIma", but that was not as telling as was this book in its intimate accounting of the war from the average German military man.

I read Eckherz's book 1 D-Day Through German eyes and wanted to read the rest of the interviews his father had with the German veterans who fought at D-Day in Normandy. I was looking forward to more insight in book 2. Eckhertz did not disappoint me. It is said the the victors write the history as well as get the spoils. The German soldier's perspective is one that most of us have not heard (even from our father's who fought in Europe in the WW2) in the United States. To read about a "unified Europe" and how the French interacted with their German Occupiers was eye opening. Most of these soldiers thought they were being patriotic and doing their duty. I should add there were no interviews with former SS. The interviews were done approximately 10 years after the D-Day invasion, so the memories for these German Veterans was still very fresh plus they now had the full picture of what their country's goals were during the war and were aware of . Many of these veterans had bought Hitler's & Goebbles' propaganda thoroughly and reflected back a bit of remorse. Ultimately they felt they had a job to do as any soldier and wanted to do their best. There was a lot of irony as many of these veterans expressed surprise at how vicious the Allies could be especially as they were from civilized countries. These are great interviews to gain insight and perspective from the German soldier's point of view. Eckhertz did not try to re-write history or make excuses with these interviews.

I finished book #2 of "Normandy from a German Perspective" which proved to be even more fascinating than the first. I was again taken in by the common soldier's attitude that by defending the European coasts they were saving Europe from international domination. If Hitler had not been such a fanatic, this might have played a lot better than it did. Still there were plenty of French, Russian, Dutch, Danish, and Norwegian SS soldiers that volunteered for Nazi Germany. The last chapter on "Wunderweapons" caught me unprepared for the German development of Thermobaric Weapons. By this account, they might have made a difference if technology, weather, and luck had not played their part. I recall that MOAB type of bombs (thermobaric) were used in Viet Nam and in Afghanistan by the United States. No credit that I can ever recall was given to the Germans for developing this type of weapon. These gas concoctions caused massive explosions that rivaled nuclear weapons in power but were safer to use and less likely to be criticized by the world community.

Additional riveting and informative firsthand accounts from German soldiers at Normandy. In this volume, however, there seemed to be more discussion of the worldview of the rank-and-file German soldier during the war and his perspective a decade later. Just as there was a range of combat specialties and experiences, opinions and reflections varied -- but all were worthwhile.Hat's off, also, to Herr Eckhertz, clearly a first-rate interviewer and a fine man. He seemed to walk a delicate line between pressing (gently) for difficult details and respecting the wartime trauma experienced by the men he interviewed. Hated to see the book end.
