This is an excellent book on Witchcraft. You’ll notice that I didn’t say Wicca; and there’s a reason that many Wiccans don’t like this book. Witchcraft is a Craft that predates the invention of Wicca and which crosses boundaries of culture and religion. Like most folk magic, many of its practices originate amongst a people living in poverty and concerned with the day to day life of real people: people who are trying to keep their families together by chasing off someone who is attempting to make off with a spouse, or to punish someone who is wronging them or a loved one. As such, this book is not all sweetness and light like most books about Wicca. You will not find the law of threefold return or the warped understanding of karma found in so many books about Wicca. Many Wiccans today are turning to practices such as hoodoo in order to supplement their rather milquetoast practices with genuine practical magic but Paul Huson shows us, in this book published in 1970, that Witches have been doing this type of work for a long time – we just needed to scrape off the New Age veneer to rediscover the true earthy underpinnings of the Craft. You’ll find things in this book that you don’t want to do; don’t do them. You'll find a way of celebrating the Wheel of the Year that might not resonate with you. You’ll find what are probably some unfamiliar names for some familiar Gods. You’ll find some dated terminology and corny cultural references. Get over it, because in this book you’ll find the real deal. Unlike many beginner’s books, it’s not padded or full of white space on the page; Huson fills it to the brim with information, but it’s not all presented as a cookbook-like series of instructions. Like many books from an earlier age, it assumes that you know how to read and reason for yourself and put things together on your own. It's definitely not Witchcraft for Dummies. It’s refreshing, really. If you’re hungry for Witchcraft that isn’t all New Age sweetness and light because your life isn’t all sweetness and light, if you’re hungry for a Witchcraft that acknowledges some darkness as well as light, I invite you to read this book.
Being a `newbie' to witchcraft these days seems NOT to be something worthy of boasting; not that I am in any way, shape or form new to this path. It seems everybody is either an amateur historian/psychologist or been at it so long they know EVERYTHING. Far be it for a curious individual to be drawn to this way of empowerment, either through a natural tendency already inherent or a genuine passion developed over time, people come to the witches' path with a thirst for knowledge. I remember when things were new to me as well, I poured through every book I could get my hands on in those days...but I quickly learned to be a more discerning reader and to tread carefully in unfamiliar territory. The question is always: what books TO READ then? What are the foundational books which most people in the community have read, and often recommend? Those trends tend to change, but some books remain a steadfast compass, pointing in the right direction which to pursue a more practical witchcraft. One book I have heard come up again and again in conversation circles, especially in recent years, has included Paul Huson's "Mastering Witchcraft". Every time I heard someone mention this book, I was more embarrassed I had never picked it up.Huson is VERY practical in his approach and this is why the text has become such a classic. Covering all the popular areas of love and protection spells, he also emphasizes the use of ritual; making every act sacred and meaningful. The exorcising and cleansing involved in each ritual object is stressed upon, along with emotions at the forefront for proper magical projection; all acts which take some amount of time. People tend to rush through their spellwork these days; keeping their magicks at the same fast-paced, instant gratification level as everything else in our lives. But just like fast food, you get what you pay for: if you want cheap, pre-packaged plastic magick the results are going to be just as shabby. Huson gives detailed instructions on practicing witchcraft as an Art, for it is a craft to hone and not a talent to waste on trifles.Without delving into too much information on the different deities suggested, Huson jumps right in on invocation and working with these specific beings; something I found just a little too careless. I prefer to investigate and research well known spirits before asking for assistance with spell work, but to each his/her own. However, this is my only real complaint about the text...everything else was delightfully detailed and relevant for both newcomers to traditional witchcraft practices and for those who may be a little more seasoned. "Mastering Witchcraft" has something to offer everyone and I now understand why it is recommended on so many `must have' lists.
Excellent choice for those seeking a new path without the necessary deity worships. It gives information regarding history and the procedures to begin your new path. I do, however, would like to warn those who are looking for shortcuts, this book will not accommodate. It does ceromonial set ups, which may deter the new minds who are not used to the elaborate arts of tools, signs, and altars etc.; unless you are ready and willingly to do it by the book and do the best you can.
Literally the book I wish I'd found as a teenage seeker.
I mainly bought this because of its reputation, inside and outside the Witchcraft community. I was hoping for a radical occult book to place on my shelf, but this is simply not the case. I believe at the time this was first published it was a radical occult book. I am sure it opened many doors for serious and dabbling practitioners. I mean the Catholic Church even said this was a DIY for Witchcraft! Silver RavenWolf sure didnt get that kind of review. If you've never read anything on the Craft this is a good book to start with. Huson trains the neophyte with solitary excellency, if the novice does the work. The Craft of the Witch is very hands on, one can not experience or develop power by reading. One must read and practice the Arte! If you are a seasoned practitioner this is a good book for historical value, you will not learn anything new. I'm glad I purchased it, but I would have prefered another book. Don't get me wrong I would have ended up with this sometime or another, but in terms of it adding to my skillset, well it's pretty much already there. All im saying is if your new to the Craft purchase it now! Its worth the read!
