Review
“For nearly four decades Anne Perry’s riveting detective novels have played out against the backdrop of the Victorian era. Fans of British royalty will delight in Murder on the Serpentine, which spotlights the woman this British author reminds us was ‘queen and empress of a quarter of the earth’ during her 63-year reign. . . . Perry writes meticulously laid-out police procedurals, and Pitt’s methodical investigation sets the novel’s early, steady pace. The tone becomes darker and more urgent when Pitt bumps up against Halberd’s and Kendrick’s friends and enemies, as well as their ‘downstairs’ help—the people who always know best what’s going on in their masters’ lives. Blackmail, double agents, illicit weapon sales and the stench of treason arm this novel with the power to entertain as well as enlighten readers on matters of history, crime-solving and devotion to queen and family. In a lovely closing scene, Her Majesty bequeaths Pitt with a most satisfying gift, one that will have Perry’s fans cheering.”—The Washington Post“The mystery may follow familiar lines, but even newcomers are likely to be charmed by scenes that deepen Pitt’s family relationships. This entry’s main strength lies in the quiet, emotionally intelligent interactions among its characters.”—Publishers Weekly“[Anne] Perry returns with another engrossing read brimming with superb period details and complex characters.”—RT Book Reviews “Marvelous . . . Perry delivers once again by simply doing what she does better than anyone else—capturing the flavor, spirit and political temperature of Victorian-era London.”—BookreporterPRAISE FOR ANNE PERRY’S CHARLOTTE AND THOMAS PITT NOVELS Treachery at Lancaster Gate “A story that is as exciting and tense as it is revealing and thought-provoking.”—Yorkshire Evening Post The Angel Court Affair “Perry melds the intellectual debates of the day with a suspenseful plot line.”—Publishers Weekly Death on Blackheath “Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining . . . The period detail is beautifully done, and realistic characters and tense action are woven seamlessly together.”—Historical Novels Review Midnight at Marble Arch “Sweeping and scandalous . . . Perry has perfected a delicate touch.”—The New York Times Book Review Dorchester Terrace “The always clever Anne Perry infuses Dorchester Terrace with the right amount of intrigue and complex relationships that have made this prolific series one of the finest in modern mystery fiction.”—Bookreporter

In the past I believe that I have always given Anne Perry books five stars. It's not that this tale wasn't engaging; it's just that--in my opinion anyway--too much time was spent, by both Thomas and Charlotte, on angst. Thomas on whether he had the guts to do his new job; and if he did find that he could be ruthless if necessary, would Charlotte still love him. Charlotte's angst had to do with no longer being useful, since Thomas now has to operate with the utmost secrecy so they could no longer solve mysteries together. So would she become boring and he no longer love her? These are understandable concerns on both of their parts; but did they have to be repeated over and over again? I got it the first time! Get on with it! Don't let this review prevent you from reading the book. It's a most worthwhile read with a couple of surprises in store. Just give yourself permission to skip over paragraphs that restate what you already know--the angst. I will be most eager to read the next book in the series to see how Pitt handles having come up so far in the world. This book had a happy ending all the way around.
Thomas Pitt has one of his most difficult cases to solve since becoming head of Special Branch, and it's at the behest of the Queen. While Narroway and Vesphasia are on tour in Europe, Thomas is asked to look into the death of one of Victoria's good friends. The man was known to be of excellent character but also to know a great deal of secrets. He was found dead by the side of a small boat on the Serpentine.Th queen had tasked him with finding out if one of Prince Edwards friends, Kendrick, was of good character.Pitt finds the inquiry difficult and would have welcomed the help and advice of Narroway. Charlotte herself is having a difficult time with the secrecy that Pitt must now have in his job. She and her sister Emily miss being able to be sleuths and help Pitt in his work.Luckily they find a way to help in ways Pitt had no way of doing. I enjoyed that, as well as seeing other characters from previous books able to lend advice and assistance. This is a very long series of books. Last fall I read them through in order. (Thank you to my local library and Axis360) I have been looking forward to this book since then.Ms Perry does not disappoint. I know she is getting up in years, I can only hope she is able to continue the series for a long time to come. May she Live Long and Prosper 😉
I'd eagerly awaited the next book in this series and I was not disappointed! I think that this may be her best, by far. The writing gave off a feeling of constantly building tension as Inspector Pitt learns to stand on his own when faced with some very dangerous decisions. He must also make moral compromises which he learns to accept after a lot of soul searching, and without being able to double check his actions with Victor Narraway or even Aunt Vespasia, something that he needed to learn to do. Did he have to compromise his strict standards? I don't think so because he realized that to protect the many, he needed to be resolute in his actions against someone who threatened all.The pace starts off somewhat slow but for good reason as the ever-present menace and hatred need to build until the end of the book when revenge is exacted through the determined actions of Thomas Pitt and his mobilized associates. For reasons of state secrecy, he cannot confide in Charlotte although she and Emily do a bit of parallel sleuthing on their own and help to contribute to a fitting end to a very bad person who threatens Queen, Country, and the future king of England. And as a bonus for the followers of this series, there is a very interesting surprise ending which will segue nicely into the next novel. Unfortunately for us, we will have to wait a bit for the next book in the series!
Certainly her best novel featuring Pitt as Head of Special Branch and a very intriguing mystery with international implications set in late Summer 1899. It is the first realistic depiction of Bertie --- the man who was shortly to become King Edward VII --- on the cusp of yet another scandal, but determined to support Pitt in clearing up the danger. One error in the presentation involved the statements made by characters (including Queen Victoria, herself) that the Prince of Wales would become Edward VII. To the best of my knowledge of English history, The Queen and many others expected Prince Albert Edward (Bertie) to become King Albert when (if) he ascended to the throne. The new king chose the name Edward rather than the name Albert upon his accession. Many people now assume that Prince Charles, the current Prince of Wales, will become Charles III if and when he succeeds Elizabeth II, but he may well assume another title such as George VII. Bertie was a fat and aging 58 years old in 1899 and it was by no means clear that he would survive his mother and unlikely that Victoria would have speculated with Pitt (or anyone else) that she might die soon. That was certainly not in her character. ----- Also, it seems to be a bit unusual that the awarding of a knighthood could have been managed in one week rather than awarded with a collection of honours at the start of a new year or on the monarch's birthday so that the planning and pageantry could be managed more efficiently. --- I enjoyed the book, however.
I hope this is not the last of the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series, but if it were, it could not have ended better! I have read the whole series, in order, as they came out. Because of this, I have been very invested in Charlotte and Thomas's triumphs and tribulations. Thank You Anne Perry for finally having Thomas deservedly recognized and appreciated. I didn't see it coming. Mostly because it contradicts how AP projected their future in a piece she wrote for Otto Penzler. (The Lineup). One of Anne's idiosyncrasies are her endings, which tend to be very abrupt to the point of not providing closure and catharsis. This one does, even though I still wanted it to go on and on! If the mantel is passed to Jemima and/or Daniel in the next one it would be fine with me. After all, As we learn in a New York Christmas, Jemima will be in a position to run across some mysteries that need to be solved. As does Daniel, I think.
