You know, things that take me away from reading a damn good book 😊 I got sucked into this on page one and the book didn’t let me go until the very end. There’s something for everyone here including a team of hard-bodied, highly-trained, dangerous men led by Six and his best-friend, a scary let’s kill a lot of people with a biological weapon plot, just enough action to warrant some seriously intense naughty bits, and a slightly damaged woman whose life is turned upside down. With all that being said, my favorite part of this entire read is Cole’s treatment of Louisa. Louisa has a legitimate issue which has kept her from living a totally full and rewarding life. I LOVE that those issues don’t miraculously disappear when Louisa starts getting some! Six doesn’t cure Louisa, he loves her, supports her, and gives her more tools to work with her issues rather than hide from them. Louisa grows as a character yet still must deal with the hand life has dealt her; it’s just a bit easier now that Six is in her life. In all, Under Fire is an excellent start to an exciting new action-packed contemporary romance series by one of my favorite authors. If you aren’t reading Scarlett Cole, you need to be and Under Fire would be an excellent place to start!

She and her partner Ivan had developed a drug they had hoped would be a break through, but after testing with very poor results realize it could actually become a dangerous chemical weapon. Louisa keeps a very close eye on her research and samples, and becomes disturbed when she sees things have been moved around. When reporting it, everyone feels she is mistaken, but she is worried.Part of Louisa's job is speaking at fund raisers which is particularly frightening for her. She has Anthropophobia , which is the fear of people. She is hiding on a balcony giving herself a pep talk when she is found by Six, who just so happens to be there providing security for the event, his first assignment. He is intrigued by this beautiful woman with an affliction he has never heard of, never mind couldn't spell.Suspense, action, and danger will keep you reading, not to mention a hot, sexy romance. I couldn't put it down and wish I could rate it with more stars! Can't wait to read the next in the series.

This is my first experience with Scarlette Cole and I was impressed. This book was very well written and kept my interest the entire time (even when I had to put it down). After reading as many books as I have- so many times I have to periodicaly refresh my memories between breaks. Not so with this book. I loved our sexy hero Six(ton) and how he seemed to be intune, amused, and accepting of nerdy but sweet, Louisa's debilitating and obsessive quirks right from the get-go. I loved that Louisa despite her fears, was a strong and intelligent enough woman that she accepted and fought through those fears. These two together were so good and hopeful that you're left with a good feeling by the end of this book. Four stars because I wish there was more details about how her mom handled the whole thing in the end, and Ivan's where-abouts to reassure us that Louisa was truly safe now, because let's face it- the threat is still out there. And this is more of a HFN book as we don't know about their future together yet. I definitely recommend this author and series and look forward to the next book.

Tristram Korten is a magazine, newspaper, and radio journalist. His print work has appeared in a wide range of publications, including GQ, The Atlantic, and the Miami Herald, and his broadcast reporting has aired on public-radio programs nationally. He is the former editor of the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting and was a 2013 University of Michigan Knight-Wallace Fellow. A long time ago, he graduated from Colby College. He lives in Miami with his wife, their two daughters, and a mutt named Misha. This is his first book.

Into the Storm is a good book – it is well written account and tells the gripping story of Hurricane Joaquin and the loss of 33 lives on the SS El Faro in the storm.While this book is a good contrast of two ships – one that survived the storm and one that did not, what makes this book only “good” rather than “great” is the author’s insistence on injecting his personal political views into the conclusions. Instead of analyzing what the two captain and crews did differently to help mariners learn from the mistakes that were made, the author concludes responsibility must be placed on Republicans and global warming. Really?Here is an excerpt:“…in the United States, powerful politicians in the Republican Party—congressmen, senators, and governors—refuse to acknowledge the threats of climate change or act in any way to lower carbon emissions, the one thing humans could do to try to offset our contribution to rising global temperatures. They have not engaged in a dialogue about what we should or can do, nor have they made much of an attempt to explain the evidence on which they base their denial. For more than eight years, congressional committees in the House of Representatives that could deal with the issue have routinely prevented federal action on climate change. Throughout his two terms in office, Rick Scott, the Republican governor of Florida—the state most susceptible to rising sea levels as well as hurricanes—prohibited the terms “climate change” and “global warming” from even being used by state agencies. Every passing minute of their inaction increases their responsibility for the safety of first responders and others affected by hurricanes, historic floods, and wildfires.”The captain of the El Faro made a navigational mistake and literally sailed into the middle of a Category 4 hurricane, rather than away from it, but the author places blame on the Governor of Florida?If the author had just focused on telling the story, this would have been a great book – but injecting divisive partisan politics into the story significantly detracts from the ultimate conclusions.

If you are reading this review then you should buy this book. The book is an exciting, heart breaking account of the sinking of two ships during Hurricane Joaquin. The author has a background in investigative reporting and has obviously done and incredibly thorough job researching the events recounted and presents the story in clear prose with the right balance of detail and narrative. This book will likely be compared to Junger's The Perfect Storm and that is an apt comparison. If you liked that book you will like this one as it at least as good and, in some ways, perhaps better. This book reads like a thriller and answers the question, how could a modern vessel with all of the weather forecasting technology available today inadvertently sail right into the heart of a hurricane?

"Into the Storm" by Tristram Korten is a delight for lovers of true-life adventure stories. The astonishing action is set off the south-east Bahamas and the Windward Passage and links the narratives of two ill-fated ships with a volatile hurricane and some truly, heroic characters in this accomplished and thoughtful, non-fiction debut. If you ever wanted to know more about the Coast Guard's courageous pilots and rescue swimmers, the merchant ships that ply the Caribbean and the horrors of tropical hurricanes, this is a book for you. But really, any reader will genuinely appreciate the loving research and meticulous detail of this modern day, suspense story.The electrifying, rescue mission detailed mid-book will leave you gnawing your nails. And the last informative chapter explaining the sinister, climate changes taking place and predicted to soon accelerate is a praiseworthy conclusion to this remarkable book. I envision an upcoming movie; a high quality, Hollywood thriller.

A page-turner that pivots between life-and-death drama and lucid explanations of topics like the science of storms, how the Coast Guard works, and commercial seafaring life. Where other books about Hurricane Joaquin have also drawn on the transcript of the "black box" from El Farro, "Into the Storm" also interweaves original reporting about the parallel (until it wasn't) drama of the Minouche to produce a more complex and interesting account.

I bought this book hoping for a replay of Junger's superb "The Perfect Storm". What I got was a lightweight, milquetoast novel-lite that barely skimmed the surface of what could have been done. It truly was the bare minimum in all respects, although the author found the time to spend an entire chapter proselytizing on his personal views on global warming, which quite harshly drew away from the book's subject. It is a basic recount of the events of the tragedy that could have been accomplished by a 10th grade book report.

A very in-depth read about the 2015 hurricane "Joaquin" and two ships that were caught in it, ultimately sinking. The first third of the book was a little slow for me: background of the main characters, technical info on ships, weather, etc. The best part was when the action started, all of which actually happened right down to the last conversations recorded on the bridges' of the sinking ships. 33 sailors died on the one ship while everyone from the smaller Columbian flagged vessel survived do to the heroism of the US Coast Guard. Reading that portion alone was worth the read.

I would have given Into the Storm 5 stars but I felt the author was a bit long winded. It was as if he wanted to impress us with his research rather than just tell the story. I was also put off with the last chapter when the writer turned political. I felt this did not add anything to the story that needed to be told. All in all a good story, albeit a little long and unneeded political statements in the closing chapter.

I bought this book cautiously, not knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised.Our Grandmothers' DrumsThis book is somewhat dated, but is still highly relevant and I think you'll find value in reading if you are interested in rural life in The Gambia.I have a close family member serving in The Gambia. I worry about him and wanted to know more of what his life may be going through.This book eases my concerns and fears somewhat. I recommend you read this if you are planning an extended stay in The Gambia or if someone you care for will be travelling and living there. This was a difficult book to read in that I had no real frame of reference for this history which is precisely why I was reading it. I found that even though the country and culture were foreign to me as I continued to immerse myself in the story a sense of the depth and complexity of the rich history and peoples came to life. I will read it again before I leave for Peace Corps service in The Gambia and I understand why it could be considered required reading for anyone prior to travel in this country.

I know someone headed to the Gambia with the US government. This book was suggested as a means to understand the area better. It is an old book, but it arrived in great condition.

I bought this for my daughter as a suggested reading for her trip to Africa. It came in excellent condition.

There was a lot of writing and highlighting throughout the book and I was disappointed that the description was misleading.

It's one of the best hot country books of all, evocative and moody. Rarely a hot country writer created such a dense atmosphere with economical wording. The weather; the landscape; feelings: Hudson describes it to the point, or so he sounds. Anyway he reflects my own impressions of the same area ingeniously, and I learned a lot.We get to know the village ladies very well. They aren't especially sympathetic or interesting. But the village interaction, organisation of field work, family and celebrations make for fascinating reading. The dialogues and local song lyrics are fun - most basic texts, but very expressive just because of that.Indirectly, we also get to know the author, who seems to be calm and unprejudiced, not interested in sensations and easy jokes. He befriends the local ladies, joins their field work, actually has influence on the community life, asks many questions, sometimes seems very confused in his situation and acts quite unreasonable. He never takes himself very importantly. For Hudson in this book, single rhymes with mingle, and he makes use of local customs to get closer to some ladies. I'd like to know how much he did not write.Sometimes I confused the many villagers Hudson introduces by name. He lives in a Muslim Mandinka village, the main topic in this book. Hudson also devotes one chapter to the circumcision celebration in a Jola village. As a non-native reader, I found Hudson's English much easier to follow than many other English books.Remarkably, this book fetched the Somerset Maugham Award. While both Hudson and Maugham write about hot Commonwealth countries, there are no other shared characteristics: Maugham features traveling gentlemen in the tropics who drink a stengah for sunset in front of their bungalows, locals remain extras; on the other side, Hudson dives deeply into village life, reaching the border of what's possible repeatedly, here the whites are the supporting acts. Exactly one time Hudson uses the expression "a trifle", a phrase Maugham almost luxuriates in.I also know Hudson's Music in My Head, a roman à clef about Youssou N'Dour in Dakar, which reads much more neurotic than Our Grandmothers' Drums. The Grandmothers' first chapter plays on Dakar airport and feels stressful like the whole book of Music in my Head. Later Hudson published only one more book (but many articles). Occasionally Grandmothers' Drums reminded me of Nigel Barley's books.

If you ever go to Gambia, this is the book to get, together of course with the ubiquitous Lonely Planet. Hudson, a young adventurer, spent 14 months in a Mandingko village, observing and commenting on the daily life. Amazingly, he was allowed to join one of the women's societies... so he followed them around, participated in their dances, field work and intrigues and documented this stuff in OGD. Hudson shows that African women are, although destined to a life of hard work, circumcission & mostly unhappy arranged marriages, far from helpless creatures. They are economically independent, they are free to choose their lovers, they sing and they dance:"It was in the early hours of the morning before the dancing began in earnest, the figures of the women glowing as though golden in the light of the hurricane-lamp, as they came running towards the drummers, spinning around only at the last moment to dance. This was what they liked more than anything elese - the extremity of this total bodily exertion, this fervent, almost ecstatic unleashment of energy, in which every muscle, every last atom of their energy would be used. It was as though the rhythms of the drums..[...]... were touching something actually inside the women themselves, to which their frenetic shaking was an involuntary, though wholly pleasurable response. They called it dia - sweetness.""Hear the sound of these drums!Our own drums!Here the sound of these drums!Our grandmothers' drums!"Hudson shows that African life can be strange beyond our imagining. The pragmatic and relaxed attitudes towards the body and sexual activity; the separatedness of women and men, who get together pretty much just for sex; the ancient initiation formulas and rites, the pragmatic interpretation of the Muslim religion mixed with animism and, above all, the aliveness of these people get through in this book really well. These Mandingko use their bodies for pleasure in a way which makes Westerners look like hollow emaciated specters lost in our greedy little calculating minds. There is much fun in African lives and much sadness - sadness that we have forgotten about. We need to learn from Africans about how to inhabit our bodies and about how to live in the present moment and this book gives us first hand information on these topics. Highly recommended.

Minor quibble - 8 Books in One?!? - really 8 BOOKLETS in One. Otherwise - this is the first book you need if you are interested in getting into Wordpress. I've seen other books by Lisa Sabin-Wilson - all are well written and very comprehensive. I have only gotten through 400+ pages and have dozens of markers where I'll have to go back and re-read to apply to my own sites.Very highly recommended.

A very comprehensive and insightful book that helps allow anyone to get going. There is a ton of content. The book is organized such that the reader can focus on specific topics according to individual needs. I have a companion book that I use, Professional Wordpress. The two go well together.

I am Spanish speaking in real estate for 12 years now. At one time I was a Esglish/Spanish verbal court interpreter. One of the bigest problems is creating a Spanish word from a Eglish word, or using a sentence to decribe what a word means because you don't know the word or want to focus on the meaning intead of the word.A "Realtist" is a member of the association of Black real estate profesionalsthis book translates the word into the Spanish word.. "Realista" which means a Realist ( person who focuses on reality)Recourse financing.. is explained as: "the investor is personaly obigated to pay"In Spanish it is translated asfinaciamiento de recurso.. which literaly means finacing a resource.RECOURSE AND RESOURCE ARE TWO DIFFERENT WORDS. I can make up my own words and phrases, and so can my bilingual associates. A lot of non Spanish speaking realtors will mislead clients with this book.There are too many other bad expamples on this book..to list here.. someone really needs to "look" at it before it causes a problem to some one.

This is a very useful volume. It appears to have been largely targeted to real estate agents with Spanish-speaking residential customers. For that purpose it is excellent. perhaps the authors will add more commercial real estate terms in another edition.
