About the Author

Enrique Olvera graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1999. In 2000, at the age of 24, he opened Pujol in Mexico City. Enrique is constantly exploring Mexico's ingredients and culinary history, and is inspired by his early memories of food. Food & Wine named him one of the "10 Next Chef Superstars" and Star Chefs' International Congress named him in the "Top 10 International Figures in World Gastronomy." Enrique also owns three outposts of Eno, a casual eatery in Mexico City; Manta, in Los Cabos; and Cosme in New York. He is the founder and force behind Mesamerica, the annual international food symposium. He also publishes Boomerang, a Spanish-language culinary magazine. Enrique lives in Mexico City and New York.

Perhaps the worst cookbook I own. The food photos are well done, but the other photos are mediocre and not well printed. I doubt I'll pick up the book again and I would return it, except it's a perfect example of what not to do when designing a cookbook and is funny is a pathetic way.I don't believe there's a recipe I'll cook or a reference I'll use. Fussier than Thomas Keller recipes with unavailable ingredients, different page sizes in the book making an awkward read and it represents a truly warped view of food and cooking. Culinary masochism perhaps would be a way of looking at it. The author opines that "Michael Bras is one of the chef's I most admire. I'm still amazed at his idea of separately cooking and sauteing thirty different vegetables to make one of the most important dishes in modern cuisine; his Gargouillou." I guess if you just had 29, it would taste odd. Not quite worth the giggle for the money,

Just received this book a day ago and flipping through my first impression is that it's a very good cook book. It's geared towards experienced culinary professional in my opinion. amazing photos of Mexico and the plates also. I really hope to visit Chef Enrique's restaurant in Mexico City one day.

Beautiful photos....minimal instruction. Tonight I attempted the "Mother Mole" recipe. Not good. I spent over $70 for the Oxacaan chiles in this recipe. The recipe says to roast all the ingredients aside from the oil and water at 450 degrees for 8 minutes. At 4 minutes in I opened my accurate Wolf convection oven and smoke came pouring out. I wasn't sure if this was normal....but I continued on only to find after the tedious work of measuring all the other ingredients was a total waste. Those chilies were torched at that overly high temperature. The mole tasted like a sour lemon. So I did it again. Carefully roasting the remaining Chihacles at 350 degrees instead of the insane 450 degrees originally instructed. Even after this the sauce was bitter. Not pleasant at all. So I started looking up mole recipes online...found Bobby Flay (everything I've ever cooked from his recipes are stellar) called for ,much more "sugar": many more raisins, honey and molasses. So I started liberally adding the Flay sweeteners. Much better but still slightly bitter and too spicy. Don't get me wrong....I love spicy food but for most folk this mole would dish out way too much heat.. So why doesn't the recipe instruct whether or not the seeds inside the chilies should be removed or not? Why doesn't the recipe state whether or not the nuts should be raw or toasted? After going through this nightmare tonight of making the mole negro....I highly doubt I will waste my time making the 2nd red mole recipe that goes with this. I've made mole before and it was delicious. This recipe was a drain on my bank account and hugely disappointing.

Great book! Although I suggest you watch Netflix Chef Table episode on Enrique Olivera so you can see what kind of recipe's you will find in the book. It is mostly a twist on traditional Mexican food with a more contemporary style. Enrique is innovating Mexican food and changing the way most people think about Mexican food. It is not only tacos and tortas there is a much more complex and beautiful side to Mexican food and this book explores that. Plus, there are beautiful pictures!

Bought this book because the photography was done by Araceli Paz and she doesn't disappoint. But the recipe were a nice surprise.The layout of the book is very nice, well organised and even if I don't plan on making a full recipe, I most certainly will do some of the sauces and star using some ingredients than before I only pass by.Kudos again to the photography, we had seen a lot of tacos and tortillas pictures by now and Enrique and Araceli show a different side, modern, but rooted in tradition.

We visited Cosme and loved it, then had to have the book. Then we went to Atla. The production quality and content is suburb.

Great photos and regional history. Straight forward recipes, with a lot of flavor.

Extremely happy with the purchase of this book. There is a elegant simplicity in the manner which Olvera introduces the flavors to the readers. To people who aren't real cooks it may seem daunting at first, but if one takes a closer look, the techniques and ingredients are on par with a traditional Mexican cooking. Yes there are different nuances as to be expected, but the tradition is all there. I would definitely suggest this book if one wants a better understanding of culture first, and food secondly. Great job on the book and the publisher Phaidon allowing the Chef to use his voice!

I think is a great book, practical and helpful if you are in this kind of field, and any field. It understands how dominant ideas of our culture exclude different ideas. How problems are not the people or inside the people but problems are the problems and people relate with problems (what is called externalization of the problem). How problems can obscure solutions, and make invisible things that are precious for people. Is a very hopeful book to deal with problems that seem to be very strong when you think is difficult to find a solution. It brings out the values, preferences, ideas, wishes, hopes of the way of living of people.

My daughter has Crohn's Disease and has been coping with a flare for over a year now. My husband and I have watched her spiral down, gradually cutting out pieces of her life and becoming more and more homebound. We always would push her to function as much as possible and she would try but, in the end, this only served to increase her anxiety about her pain and her ability (or lack thereof) to cope with it. Finally, after deciding to keep my daughter at home so that she would qualify for a school tutor, I found this book. Now, I understand that anxiety and worry physiologically "turns up the volume" on pain. It's real pain, but it's something that she can learn to have some control over and reduce. This book has helped me to pull various professionals into my daughter's life (talk therapist, biofeedback therapist, Iyenger yoga instructor) that are helping her to build the coping skills that she so desperately needed. Additionally, we have changed the structure of her day at home to give her more responsibility/control for her well being and to gradually increase her confidence with being an active person again. It's working!! She still has pain but her ability to function with it has been improving noticeably!

Are you the parent of a child who has chronic pain? I am. My husband and I have searched for numerous doctors to help our son with chronic pain including stomach pain, neck pain, headache, muscle cramps, backache, joint pain, constant ill health, brain fog. We've been searching for 12 years. This book describes many cases of children and how they were helped to overcome their distress thus relieving parents' anguish. In our case, my son was recently disgnosed with Lyme and Bartonella Disease and we are starting on that path to remission and recovery. I saw my son's experiences in the lives of children described in this book. It helps parents realize they are not alone. It offers solutions for a number of ailments through pain management proscibed by doctors at UCLA. Julie

We came across this book after my adolescent daughter had been hospitalized twice and completely disabled from migraines that started when she hit puberty. We'd crossed the country to get her the best available treatment for migraines, without much improvement. By the time we read this book, we'd exhausted all the medical options available to us and were completely desperate. Its very reasonable methods for dealing with chronic pain changed her, and therefore our, lives. We gave up looking for the most high powered doctors and found local doctors with experience in dealing with chronic pain who were in synch with the methods discussed in the book. (E.g., children with chronic pain need to function to get better, since pain is a product of the conscious mind; medications can help, but aren't a silver bullet; yoga and biofeedback can help children cope.) One year later my daughter, although not pain free, is much, much better, and enjoying life again. She's back in school on a regular basis, has a normal social life again, and is generally back to living her life.

This book is a great resource for anyone with chronic pain, not just children. It provides good insight and understanding of issues. It also gives some excellent techniques to try for calming symptoms without medication. If you are reading this then someone you know is probably in pain and can benefit from this book. Do them a favor and buy it and use it.

My 10 yr old son is a patient of Dr. Zeltzer, the author of this book. We had been through a nightmare ordeal because of my son's chronic stomach pain. Seen numerous doctors, tried mind altering meds. Everthing changed after our appt. with her clinic. Another patient told me about the book and it soon became clear that this author is one of the doctors who is both brilliant and compassionate, a rare thing for most doctors. This is a thorough comprehensive book that changed the direction of my son's health issues. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a child who is suffering some kind of chronic illness.

Great book....gave it away as a present

Having a son who suffers a chronic pain condition brought on by a virus, this book was a Godsend. Finally someone could explain to me why painkillers don't work on children and why the brain won't shut off the pain. Great explanation of how kids are different than adults when it comes to pain and also, great actual examples of kids and pain and what worked and what didn't. Medications are also explained in depth, as well as more homeopathic and non-medical cures.

It is well written and easy to enjoy. It is the history of New York as seen by 2 ladies who not only lived through it, they were part of it.

Helen Hayes and Anita Loos: two great ladies who took a challenged and did something great!

Actually I think this books is a 3 1/2 star, 4 star is probably too generous.This is a cute book if you are a fan of Helen Hayes or Anita Loos or live in New York. It's written by Anita Loos who is a fascinating person (although unfortunately this is not really revealed in this book - best to see her autobiographies) and basically they tour around NYC and write about what they see and who they speak with. It's suppose to be them revisiting places that were important to them in the 1920s and 1930s and it would have been quite interesting to hear their experiences from that time. It doesn't quite turn out that way, it's mainly fluff, there are some tidbits but they just touch on interesting things but then go no further.It was written around 1969 or 1970 and it is fun to hear their thoughts on hippies and all that stuff going on at that time, I think it was quite alarming, particularly from their perspective although they try to keep an open mind about the "younger generation" (who are now entering retirement). And funny things that now are hard to believe, such as Greenwich Village was still a place with cheap rents in 1969.I think if you live in NYC and it will be interesting to hear about locations and neighborhoods from the 1920s and then the 1960s and compare it to what you are familiar with now.But unless you live in NYC or are a big fan of either of the authors, it's probably not too interesting.

I read this book years ago as a library book. Never thought I would ever find it let alone own it. Can't wait to read it again. This book gives you a behind the scenes look at vintage newyork. . These two women knew everyone.

103 pages, but most of the page is blank or light blue. What a waste, they chose to page lay out, more then making the names easy to read. Each page has lots of white space and a pretty light blue box. However the names of the anatomical parts are relegated to a small area and a smaller font than is needed. So, sad that they did not value the fine work they did getting these photos. It could have been much more useful. No matter how fancy they pages are designed, the subject is not a coffee table book. Why did they treat it like a book no one would ever bother to read? It could have been great. The art director was not a scientist, and showed no respect for the content. At about a dollar a page I expect you to respect the reader.

This book is so helpful because you are actually able to see the muscles/tendons/bones of a disection almost immediately post mortem. I am studying equine anatomy for a bodyworking class and this has really made clear where each muscle and tendon are located.

Skin Game is the fifteenth book in Jim Butcher’s fantastic Dresden Files series, and this review is going to assume that you have already read the first fourteen books. If not, you should get on that.Since this novel is the 15th out of a proposed series of about 20 books, you can expect this number to hold a certain degree of significance in the life of Harry Dresden. Much like in the 10th book, Small Favor, Queen Mab wants Harry to do something despicable for her, and he doesn’t really have a choice in the matter. In this case, he's robbing the Lord of the Underworld for some of the Church's most powerful artifacts--and he is allied with Nicodemus Archleone, the baddest of the Denarians and Harry's greatest archenemy.Harry Dresden has had a rough time of it so far, and the books thus far have had their ups and downs; lots of fist-in-the-air moments juxtaposed with some cringe-worthy scenes of forced, awkward dialogue. Skin Game is a return to some of Butcher’s best characters, and it is easily one of the better books in the series.I loved this book for many reasons, but the greatest one is this: Harry is back.While the last few books have been weighed down pretty heavily by the established lore of Dresden’s world, Skin Game introduces some fresh faces to bring back Harry’s dry wit and light-heartedness that have been so notably absent. He is less mopey about being the Winter Knight, or at least less vocal about it, and he is just as affably awkward around beautiful women as he was at the start of the series. After having dated Susan Rodriguez, resisted the advances of Lara Raith, and thoroughly sexed the Queen of Air and Darkness, you’d think Harry would be able to cope with alluring fun bags and shapely thighs. Nevertheless, this lack of character development was actually a bonus, because it made him more like the Dresden of old, the young renegade wizard who didn’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.Still, that doesn’t mean that we’re wiping the slate clean. Harry has been a pretty awful friend for the past couple books, and that karmic justice is catching up to him now. He can’t keep up the lone-wolf protector routine forever, and Butcher brings some of these issues to the fore here.In addition, Harry has been the Winter Knight for a while now, and it shows in this book. It isn’t always explicitly shown, but the kinds of injuries he sustains and ignores, the kinds of comments he makes without realizing, all indicate a deeper dependence on the mantle. Several of these moments gave me chills (pun intended), because like it or not, Harry Dresden the gumshoe private investigator is disappearing on us, slowly being replaced by something colder and darker.Harry is also considerably cleverer than in previous books; he’s no longer the fire-slinging brute who stumbles upon victory by sheer luck. A wizard can overcome almost any obstacle given proper time to plan, and Harry finally seems to be following his own advice, devising plans that make his contract suicide after Chichén Itzá look like child’s play.While Dresden still cracks off plenty of Star Wars references, Skin Game adds a slew of new fandoms to his repertoire, so be on the lookout for some Monty Python and Lord of the Rings as well, to name a couple.I did not receive an ARC of this book. I didn’t even pre-order it and wait to read it after a good night’s rest. I stayed up until midnight, and then until 3 a.m. (because apparently midnight on EST isn’t good enough for Amazon), just so I could start as soon as possible. Then I stayed up until sleep sucker-punched me into unconsciousness; and when I woke up, I started reading again. And you know what?It was worth it.After more than fifteen months of waiting, Jim Butcher has provided me with a book that improves upon the best aspects of past Dresden stories. Am I biased for being a long-time fan of the series? Probably. But fifteen books in, this story isn’t really for newcomers, is it? This review is for all of those readers who, like me, have questioned whether Harry Dresden was worth following for another six years or more, whether Jim Butcher had lost interest in his flagship character after more than a decade and a half of writing about him.I like to think this book is a tribute to the fans. It has pulpy fight scenes and distractingly beautiful women, and the build-up to the heist of Hades is something to behold. Harry is becoming more aware of the community of allies that he has created, and he is becoming wise in his years. Dresden makes up for a lot of debts he has accumulated over the years, and it feels like we finally get some closure to things that have bothered Harry for ages now.If you’ve read this far, you’re good people. I like good people, and I liked this book. You can do the math.5/5 stars.

Great Book, Great Series. WHEN ON GOD"S GREEN EARTH WILL WE GET TO READ THE NEXT ONE!!!!!! It's been over 4 years man. You get writers block or just rich and lazy? I'd like to be able to finish the series before one of us dies. That's not being flippant I started reading your first book in this series 18 years ago. You used to pump out 1 a year for 14 years straight. Now its been over 4 year's and nothing?? Do your fans a favor and get back in front of your type writer, keyboard or hell pick up a pen and paper but finish the series. PLEASE!!!!!!

Can't wait for the next one.Long version, regarding the whole series:Warning: Polysyllabic words & some hinting at the characters who eventually show up in the story arc, spoiler-ish mentionings ahead.When I first began reading this series, I had already read the Codex Alera, and thought it was pretty good. There was a good bit of obvious borrowing from real historical events in that one, and I feel like it both added credence to the story arc, but simultaneously detracted from the author's creativity. But as my college art professor always half-jokingly said, "Good artists borrow. Great artists steal." Having developed an appreciation for his writing style, I decided to take a dip in this pool of radiance, which at first was not nearly as radiant as it has eventually become. I would like to compare Jim Butcher's writing to fine wine, only getting better with age. But who am I kidding, I drink wine out of boxes, and only really know anything about fine writing, which this definitely is, and I feel qualified to make that judgement call having read over a thousand books as of 2 years ago, and over half of them without pictures.I would say that his use of esoteric vocabulary is surpassed only by Ayn Rand's, but instead of espousing a thinly veiled message of society-ruining selfishness, bordering on pure evil, which if adopted by large enough numbers of people, would certainly lead to another reign of terror, like that of Robespierre, instead as counterpoint, Butcher delivers a protagonist espousing the opposite of selfishness as a philosophy of life. He imbues his protagonist, Dresden, with a worldview chocked full of Weltschmerz (google “Sheldon Cooper Weltschmerz”, for a video with a concise & mildly comical explanation), who uses his wizardly powers for the good of the many, instead of self-promotion. Quick-witted sarcasm & chivalrous courage in the face of villainous adversaries of varying ilk, running the gamut from trifling werewolves & faeries, to demons & fallen angels, with some vanilla human evildoers to balance the scales, make for some of the most entertaining literature I have ravenously devoured with insatiable hunger, similar to how Toot devours pizza (inside joke).Initially I found the plots somewhat transparent, formulaic, and predictable, but after the first six-ish books, I realized that regardless of any predictability of pattern, I have become enamored of Butcher's sense of humor, and without his puns, witticisms, and sci-fi references, I find other authors lacking, who are otherwise perfectly good writers. Even the comedy of comedy-genius, Christopher Moore, can no longer satiate my insatiable desire for the comic relief, provided by Butcher's comical comedy stylings, using the supernatural world of Chicago as his tragicomical setting with Harry Dresden as his delivery medium for fantastically biting one-liners, and insults.Despite the fantastic nature of the universe he has created, populated by pan-pantheonic gods & myths, Butcher still manages to include such geek-necessary concepts as the conservation of mass & energy, as well as momentum, without simply using “magic”, to explain away physically impossible supernatural feats. In other words, he's a fantasy author for those who refuse to, or just can't, suspend disbelief in the literally impossible, and not just the extremely improbable.And when I say pan-pantheonic, I mean it. Dresden has encountered beings from every western religion, children's story, & superstition I can think of, and then some. This voluminous of a collection of supernatural baddies hasn't been compiled since Jakob & Wilhelm Grimm collected a whole culture’s-worth of them. I'm still waiting on the tooth faerie, but that one might be too far of a stretch, even for grown-up & turned-badass-Harry Potter-meets-Stretch Armstrong, wizard Harry Dresden.Adding one final note, as a personal “thanks” to the author, I appreciate the Tolkienian choice of staff, instead of wand, even if there is sometimes a “blasting rod,” the weightier focusing tool lends increased gravitas, and in my mind also greater veritas, in spite of the self-contradictory nature of the relationship between science and magic, to the magical aspects of Dresden’s universe, in much the same way a heavier glass bottle makes people think their wine is higher quality. It is in the end, all about perception, just ask Molly.Please, Mr. Butcher, release the next books as quickly as possible. I beg you. I don't want to forget the nuances of the stories, because I have never been able to read a book more than once, even if just to refresh my memory. If it's more than a few months until the next one, I will end up forgetting.

This was pretty darned amazing. There's a lot of action and so many twists I couldn't keep track of them all. There are returning villains and allies all of whom are really distinct. His characters are never cardboard cutouts or vanilla bad (or good) guys or gals.Mab has 'loaned' Harry's services out to one of the baddest of the bad and he's got to fulfill his assignment without getting himself or his associates killed and without doing anything more than the actual task he was given to help the bad guy.There several times I had to stop reading for a minute and just tell myself what it seemed was about to happen wasn't because Jim, hopefully, wouldn't do that to us.Once again a great story with great characters and a lesson that doesn't beat you over the head - everyone makes mistakes and everyone makes a choice. Really makes you think

As a youth workers of 15+years I have worked with countless teens who have struggles as either a bully, the bullied or became a bystander. The Bullying Breakthrough is a fresh look at the problems of everyone involved in the ‘bullying’ experience. I found all the stories of individuals who are victims of ‘bullying’ to be helpful as well as the suggestions for resolutions to the anxiety that is a by-product of bullying. The fact that the book points to the bystanders who do not want to get involved; as well as, the authorities who ignore the stressful moments victims express to them, is most refreshing. I also noted that since the book is written by someone who has been bullied in his past; it appears to be more authentic. The detailed suggestions for parents to become more aware of bullying among their children were well presented and structurally informative. Many of the suggestions are just ‘plain good sense’, but to have them expressed in a book does alert the parent to responses of protection and proactive intervention to build identity, confidence, and connection with socialization in their child’s life. I would recommend this book to my clients as I work as an Educational Therapist and my students encounter bullies in their schools.

Bullying is a major topic when it comes to our youth today. How did we let it get so out of hand and what can we do to put a stop to it? That’s exactly what Jonathan McKee explains in his book, “The Bullying Breakthrough“. This is the resource that I wish existed when I a kid, but also when I was researching the topic for my counseling classes back in college.McKee walks readers through the bullied, bystanders, and bullies with well-researched statistics, applicable ways to go about resolving the problem without being judgemental. His first-hand accounts also help his credibility with the information he shares. The information he shares is not new, at least not to someone who has studied the topic, but he is insightful and he is not afraid to share the ugly truth of how bullying impacts our students while keeping that spark of hope alive.I also appreciated the chapter he included ways that the principal, administration, and their staff can help resolve the bullying problem. Sometimes we forget that even these people are human and while they want to help, don’t always know what to do. He also explains that it’s not enough to pay for anti-bullying posters and have the occasional assembly. More needs to be done and these are some ways we can do just that.This is an excellent resource that I would personally recommend every parent, principal, teacher, youth pastor or leader, counselor, or anyone who works with today’s youth. This is the kind of book I wish I could gift to every single person in these roles, but unfortunately, due to finances, I can’t.
