ATime to Stand takes a different approach to the dilemma of a police involved shooting in a small town in Georgia. A teenaged black up & coming basketball standout makes the mistake of running with an edgy crowd, and is shot one dark & stormy night by a white police officer. While the black teen languishes in ICU in a coma, tensions in the community start to heat up. The policeman's family is endangered when shots are fired through the walls of his daughter's bedroom. An older attorney agrees to defend Luke, the policeman, but he hires a young black female attorney to take the lead in the defense. This does not play well as the black community is outraged that she would defend a white man who shot a black teen. The heat builds as she works to find evidence to keep her client from a long prison term. The plot and characters are well developed, although it does move rather slow at times. I happen to enjoy lawyer books & the process involved in building a case, so the details did not bog me down. I recommend it to all who like Gresham, but prefer their fiction to be rooted in the Bible. Robert Whitlow has never let me down with his books, and he has kept up his winning streak with this one.
Robert Whitlow is one of my book club’s favorite authors. We read every book that he publishes. A Time to Stand was our selection this month, and we were not disappointed. A timely novel, it looks at the prejudices and preconceived attitudes of a small southern town — a town that reflects America as a whole. We found this an excellent look at the racial divides within our society. Highly recommended.A Time to Stand begins with the shooting of an unarmed African American teenager by a young white policeman. As the investigation begins, the sentiments of the town fall along racial lines. Whitlow does a great job of showing the deep-rooted prejudices and injustices that influenced the modern day attitudes of both sides. At the center of the action is Adisa Johnson, a young black lawyer who at first wants to serve as a special prosecutor in the case, but comes to represent the police officer. Controversy follows quickly.Forgiveness is a major theme of the novel. As the young man who is shot fights for his life, his grandmother who raised him calls upon her community to grant forgiveness to the police officer. She never says justice shouldn’t be served, but does call for the healing that forgiveness can bring. Her character also causes controversy and causes Adisa to reevaluate her own beliefs. The criminal investigation and legal proceedings are interesting, but really take a back seat to the evolution of the main characters and the community as a whole as they are forced to confront deeply held beliefs that do not align with what Jesus teaches. There are plenty of twists and turns to the story, but at the end the characters and the community are stronger for the lessons learned.A Time to Stand is Whitlow at his best. He is a strong writer whose characters speak to the hearts of his readers. There’s a lot to learn from this book, and it will cause the reader to reevaluate their own thinking. Another highly recommended read from Whitlow.Highly Recommended.Audience: adults.
Robert Whitlow writes outstanding legal novels that don't go over the reader's head or tangle us up in lawyer-speak. This one parallels America's experiences over the past few years with white cop / black victim?perpetrator? shootings. I hope Christians of all colors saw it as balanced as I did, given that Whitlow clearly worked hard at even-handedness. The author loves Georgia and does not take any cheap Hollywood-style shots at the South. Great novel.One thing left me disturbed, though. A pastor and his deacons want to censure a church member who chooses to forgive the man who shot her grandson, without a demonstration of repentance on the officer's part. I was waiting for the author to correct this unBiblical theology, but it did not come. A word study of "forgive" and "forgiveness" in the New Testament will contradict their assertion.
I highly recommend this book. It touches on things that are relavent today. It also shows that we are all human beings in the eyes of God and the color of our skin is not what defines us , it's the content of our hearts and our actions.

This book is fairly typical of a Whitlow novel: southern town, legal setting, fighting for an underdog, strong religious presence. What’s different is the tie in to a fairly current hot topic and Whitlow handles it well. Both sides are represented fairly and given time to air their POV. The resolution is a bit too “happily ever afterâ€, for my taste, but, this too is Whitlow. All in all, “A Time to Stand†is well worth the time to read.
I am a huge fan of Robert Whitlow and was excited about his new book. It was good but just kinda "eehh" for me. I had no problem laying it down and doing something else which is unlike any other RW book I have ever read. Still a great story by a great author but probably not his best in my opinion.
This was a fascinating read that offered two sides of a very contentious coin. I thought both sides were well written and you came to truly care about both. When offered an opportunity to overcome and bridge the divide, it was the character you came to know most clearly who stepped up. Without offering any spoilers, I will say this: the story is relevant and the moral desperately needed in our culture today.The only issue for me was the Kindle formatting. Many of the words were split in the wrong place. Pus-hing and ca-lling are two examples of how the paragraph formatting fell. It is really annoying when you're deep in the story and the formatting interferes with the readability. Amazon should really fix this issue.
