It's only a guide to the world if you want to live fast and die young. The pictures are very high quality and accurate.* The photo of a man called James May on page 214 in a speedo may be highly arousing (or triggering trauma) depending on your mental stability. (Clearly someone who is mentally stable will have the second reaction). It is my understanding that the writer of this book is called Richard Porter, but some call him Dick. (Don't worry, I'm not one of those people). This book is full of facts!** It does a great job of summarizing the first season of some internet show called The Grand Tour, but it does much more than that! (Though, it does not perform any tricks or favors). Fans of this show might enjoy this book.Even with that in mind, I feel compelled to give this book five stars simply because there is a photo of a Cinnabar Orange Aston Martin DB11 between pages 94 and 95.Also, pages 1-4 were bent in the corner and slightly torn on my copy. I may have to iron them out while humming a jolly tune just like James May irons his trousers.*Some photoshop assembly required.**And also falsities.

Purchased this as a gift but I ended up reading it myself first and man ... I almost wanted to order a second one for my collection. If you're a fan of old Top Gear and the new Grand Tour, this is a must buy.

This book was so good I had trouble putting it down.It was funny, silly, weird and informative. If you like GrandTour this book is for you.

Not what I was expecting. Read the kindle version. When they try to be funny they fail miserably. The tv show is a better option.

This was a gift for my son. Before I gave it to him, I glanced at it. It is a fantastic book!

The car guys are always great! Looking forward to this season an Amazon

Great book! Lots of funny anecdotes & background stories to add to the mystique that is Jeremy, Richard & James!

I had a hard time determining a fair number of stars to give this book. I enjoyed it, but feel it "delivers" on its premise to a very limited extent. I ultimately felt 4 stars was a more fair rating than 3, as I believe some of my expectations, as indicated below, might be a bit out of whack with the book's premise. What I liked:-Taste of the pro poker lifestyle from a variety of perspectives.-Uniform question format allows you to see trending issues and common challenges the range of players face.-Many participants went above and beyond to provide detailed answers, and really drill down into their experiences and practices, which did tend to compensate for some of the respondents addressed in my comments below. What I disliked:-Uniform question format also proved useless in cases where participants provided short answers lacking any depth and providing little in the form of the information that would be expected from the question posed.-No follow up was done on participants that provided limited responses. One respondent in particular, when asked what he does to keep his skills sharp, said "I don't do any of those things" (He was referring to the example responses which are "Books, Training Videos.." among a few other standard examples. I understand this participant many not read books or watch videos, that is fine, but WHAT DO YOU DO if you don't do those things? To not follow up when you get a worthless answer is not only frustrating to readers, but devalues the book as a whole. If it doesn't provide value to the reader, either follow up to further develop the response or don't include the entire participant's "contribution".-I appreciate that the participants were both accessible to the author and consistently profitable, but I really do question the inclusion of some of them into the book considering some of their responses. This does tie in with a previous point, but a few of them were so unimpressive and provided so little information that it was almost annoying and made you actually question why you just spent a few minutes reading what they had to say. That should have been considered more and edited accordingly. Conclusion and Suggestions:Real Grinders? Yes. How to play poker for a living? Yes and no.If this premise were to be adequately addressed, would have been nice to see a summary list at end of each interview with suggestions, recommended books/videos/coaches/forums, best practices, etc based on that particular response in order to provide key takeaways. An aggregate list at the end of the book with the most common recommendations would have made this book a huge hit in the community of players that are on the fence about committing full time. While the book overall was enjoyable, and did provide some very useful anecdotes, tips, expectations and a solid sample of the grinder lifestyle, I would have gladly paid twice what I paid for it to see responses with more depth, as well as some of the suggestions in the previous paragraph. If you are interested in playing poker full time and want get a taste, this book will deliver. As I said previously, there are a few participants in the book that provide so much value to the reader they carry the book in themselves, as they provide POVs and tips you might not easily find doing a quick forum search. For the price, I would recommend it!

Won't help your game but a fun read.

Compilation of answers to a questionnaire that author sent to various poker players. Useful to hear opinions from grinders.

Good book.

This might be the single greatest book ever written. When I hit that "buy with one click" button I had NO IDEA what I was in for. This book is so much more then just the insight of the lives of some of the best poker players the world has ever seen.... Its also a book about life.Through this book, Mr Cartwright has taught me how to laugh, how to cry and how to love. I experienced the full scale of human emotions while reading this book plus a few more which i found both deeply confusing and exciting. Now im no expert on the process through which people must go through in order to be knighted, but I'd say this book is resume enough! Not only is Mr Cartwright clearly the leading authority on all things spiritual, psychological, sexual, biological, emotional, cosmological, philosophical and ecologicalbut hes also a great listener (hear that ladies?)as it is obvious that Mr Cartwright is the second coming of Christ i put forward that the next edition of "Read Grinders: How to Play Poker for a Living" be renamed as "the third testament" and should be analysed by young children in order for them to learn how to be a good personWhen people ask me what i would say to Mr Cartwright when i arrive at the pearly gates its this..... thank you sir. thank you for such a wonderful book. thank you for the goodness and love and wonder you have impregnated the world with through the vehicle of this book.

Great real life interveiws

Good item, great condition

I consider myself to be a cautious gambler but I have a relative who thinks that he may have what it takes to be a pro. I doubt that but became interested in those who really are able to do this for a living and just finished reading author Ashton Cartwright's "Real Grinders". The fascinating story and study of twenty-eight pro poker players and their views on what it takes to be successful at this. There are plenty of strategy books out there but this book interested me more than anything because these are interviews of people who are actually making a living doing this, which is rare. Great read.

From the Inside Flap

In 1943, with Lvov's 150,000 Jews having been exiled, killed, or forced into ghettos and facing extermination, a group of Polish Jews daringly sought refuge in the city's sewer system. The last surviving member this group, Krystyna Chiger, shares one of the most intimate, harrowing and ultimately triumphant tales of survival to emerge from the Holocaust. "The Girl in the Green Sweater" is Chiger's harrowing first-person account of the fourteen months she spent with her family in the fetid, underground sewers of Lvov. "The Girl in the Green Sweater" is also the story of Leopold Socha, the group's unlikely savior. A Polish Catholic and former thief, Socha risked his life to help Chiger's underground family survive, bringing them food, medicine, and supplies. A moving memoir of a desperate escape and life under unimaginable circumstances, "The Girl in the Green Sweater" is ultimately a tale of intimate survival, friendship, and redemption. KRYSTYNA CHIGER survived the Holocaust by hiding with her family in the sewers of Lvov, Poland for 14 months. A retired dentist, she lives in Long Island. DANIEL PAISNER has collaborated on many books, including the "New York Times" bestselling "Last Man Down: A Firefighter's Story of Survival and Escape from the World Trade Center."

As I have been researching the Holocaust, I saw "The Girl In the Green Sweater" had just been released. I believe that was in 2008. Since I had other survivor stories to read, I put off the purchase of this book until recently. Finally, I could wait no longer. The cover of the book has been calling out to me ever since I first saw the title and cover of the book. What an incredible read of history about the Holocaust years. With each Holocaust survivor story I have read, I gain invaluable wisdom, lessons, and more insight for the will to live. I learn that no matter insurmountable odds against the Jewish people, there were those who conquered and overcame those odds. I also continue to learn about the heroes in the Jewish people's lives who risked everything to save and preserve them. This story is really a story within a story. One component of this story reveals the character one of the heroes, Leopold Socha. His continued street smarts and ingenuity was instrumental to keeping his Jewish family alive in underground world called the sewer. Socha's quick thinking along with his survival skills locked him into a protective mode over those that were under his care and psychologically began a redemptive lifestyle from his past that was jaded and full of unlawful actions. The second component is about the people he selected to rescue and begin a long journey to save, protect, and risk his own life. Ultimately, there will be 11 survivors. In those survivors, is one nuclear family. A family of four, the Chiger family, that made it through the Holocaust in tact and alive. This family of four would go on to become one of three nuclear families in their town to survive. Incredible odds against them. Yet, because of the actions of Socha and his team of sewer workers, this family survived. As a teacher, this story and other Holocaust stories have provided me with such rich teaching material about the human complexities. Those who choose to speak out. Those who choose to remain silent. Those who have compassion. Those who ridicule. Those who hate. Those who love. Those that feel a sense of entitlement. And those who continue to love through it all. In this story and others, I have witnessed through the words of the survivors the importance of creating a sense of normal despite such incredible chaos. Ignacy Chiger, a very educated and wise man, continued to teach his children while living in the sewers. Absolutely amazing. His desire to educate outweighed any obstacles he was living through, faced with, and having to overcome while simultaneously dealing with those obstacles. The book first gives the history of their area of Lvov, Poland. A place that is first Russian occupied before the German occupation. The reader will be given history of this land and how it affects the people living in it. Great information to understanding the history of this time period. Once the German occupation occur, there has to be quick thinking and planning in order to even have a chance at survivor. In planning, life in the sewer begins. Such a historical piece of writing and never a boring spot in the storyline.I highly encourage all to read. A life lesson in this story; "Where there's a will there's a way." A timely piece for today's culture that no matter what wrong has been done to you in your life, you can choice to take your life back without revenge.

I watched the Polish movie before reading this book. Credit to the director and writers for getting the movie as close to the book as possible. Only in a few small ways did it differ and those hardly worth mentioning. Most Holocaust memoirs are too painful to read. This one manages to convey all of the horror of the situation without completely depressing the spirits of its readers. It helped me to know that the story had a happy ending--as much of one as it is possible for such stories to have. The family survived as a unit--spoiler--and went on with their lives. Well worth reading!

Krystyna Chiger has written a moving memoir of her family's struggle to stay alive during the Holocaust. The Chigers enjoyed a relatively prosperous life in pre-war Lwow in Poland. Their fortunes turned when first the Soviets occupied the city and then the Nazis. The Chigers, like all of Lwow's Jews, were forced into the ghetto where they awaited certain death. Krystyna's father joined other Jews in burrowing down into the city's sewers where they were met by Leopold Socha, a Polish sewer worker who promised to help them for a price. When the Nazis liquidated the ghetto in 1943, the Chigers and other Jews escaped into the sewer. They spent the following fourteen months underground in the filthy, wet, rat-infested sewer. Krystyna's father served as the ad hoc leader of the Jewish group and played a major role in their survival. Socha faithfully provided them food and supplies, even purchasing them with his own money after the Jews' funds ran out. The group gained their (relative) freedom when the Soviets "liberated" the city in 1944.I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It presents the same events as Agnieszka Holland's film, "In Darkness" (2011) (see my review), but Krystyna Chiger provides many, many details of the group's underground struggle which could not possibly have been included in the movie. If you must choose between the book or film, choose the book.

I enjoyed the book even with the bleakness. But kept leaving it to read other books and articles. It pulled me back and I did this several times. The story never left me during this time. Finally finished it after a few months. Interesting, I have never done this before. Give it a try it is an astounding recollection of how a family and others survived during WWll.Gave it a 3 but closer to four in the rating... at 3 1/2.

As a busy academic, I hardly read a book word by word. Ian Johnson’s The Souls of China, however, is one of those books that I’m willing to read so closely. This book will help you better understand – even challenge your old knowledge on – what “religion” is, what China is, and how contemporary faith is practiced by ordinary Chinese people. The topic of the book – religion – is heavy, but the book itself is easy to read. Johnson strategically chooses three groups of ordinary people to tell a consistent story – the spiritual revival after Mao – that is big enough to reflect the “soul(s)” of contemporary China. Many readers might have read much about Chinese “Culture” (with a capitalized C), but very few books in the market do a good job detailing how Chinese “Culture” is perceived and practiced in everyday life and thus become Chinese cultures that really matter for most ordinary people. In his sophisticated writing, Johnson presents us Chinese religious beliefs through the Ni family in Beijing that makes an annual pilgrimage to a Buddhist temple that worships Our Lady of the Azure Clouds, the Li family in Shanxi that practices a form of family-based Daoism and folk religion, and a group of Protestant Christians in a house church in Chengdu led by a charismatic preacher Wang Yi. These stories Johnson brilliantly narrates in the book are so intriguing that I sometimes thought I was interacting with these people directly.Johnson shows his wisdom from the mundane details of ordinary people’s everyday lives. He is humble and respects every person in this book, which is part of the reason why this book is so original, so special and so touching. By showing that ordinary people in China can understand “infinitely more,” Johnson allows them to speak, in their own words, about how they actively seek faith to transform and fulfill their lives on their own, instead of being led, aimlessly, by the vague slogans of the Party and the radical changes brought by modernity and globalization. As a Chinese scholar in the West, I have been trained to criticize other colleagues’ works. But The Souls of China is so insightful that I have to drop my weapons and give it my highest compliments. I have to admit that I’ve learned a lot about my country and my people from this book. A good journalist is also a lay sociologist; Johnson is too good to be an ethnographer, as he can always easily fit into Chinese communities and provide his readers the best observations. No matter how much you know about China – from a knowledgeable scholar of China Studies to a lay reader who is recently planning your first trip to China – you will find this book original, enjoyable, informative, intriguing, smart, and sometimes “as surprising as cold water running through your back.”

I am going to keep this review short for fear of gushing over the writer's masterful prose, grit and clarity both, and the broad conceptual umbrella he spreads over developments in China that would take a smorgasbord of academic essays to cover. Suffice to say Mr. Johnson has both the breadth of intellect to see what's going on in macro terms and the compassionate humanity and insight to make his observations personal, tangible, and memorable. Despite my voracious appetite for books about Chinese culture, history, and philosophy, I can't say I've ever read a better one. If you want to understand rarely covered but real and important undercurrents in China today, buy this book and devour it.

We’ve seen several academic books about religion in contemporary China in recent years, but this look at Chinese religious practice by the American journalist Ian Johnson is both well researched and highly accessible. Like other books by journalists living in China, “Souls of China” features first-hand accounts that bring a kind of intimacy and immediacy that the general reader finds engaging. In Johnson’s book, these passages are not ends in themselves, but serve to illustrate Johnson’s thesis about the state of religion in China today. When he joins in on a Buddhist pilgrimage or a Protestant Christmas Eve service, Johnson reveals a society hungry for meaning beyond that which a free market and Communist ideology can provide. “I know there’s something bigger than us that guides us,” says one of his subjects (p. 174).Johnson says that the aspirations of the people in his book can be summarized by the word “Tian” or “Heaven.” By this he means that they seek justice and respect, and a well-ordered society. The author goes on to say that this yearning for justice, order, and meaning may help transform Chinese society, perhaps not in the way that Buddhism and Taoism transformed Taiwan into a democracy, but that in the long-term will influence China to embrace shared universal values and morality. President Xi, who has demonstrated a willingness to be heavy-handed in his control of Chinese society, at the same time seems comfortable with a certain level of religious practice, so long as the religion being practiced has Chinese characteristics and is overseen by one of the state bodies regulating religion (p. 356). In general, this means that Christianity, and especially Catholicism, have not fared well against the state apparatus. Nonetheless, the tolerance for some things religious has given all religious expressions a little more latitude than they may have had before. When it comes to Western-derived religions, Johnson devotes most of his space to Protestant sects; Protestantism, because it is decentralized and isn’t tied to a foreign base of influence, is thriving relative to the state-controlled Catholic Church, with its suspicious Vatican ties. It’s unfortunate there isn’t more on Catholicism given the rich history of the Catholic Church in China. (Johnson subsequently wrote about the Catholic Church in China in the Jesuit periodical, America, October 2, 2017.) You won’t find much about Islam in “Souls of China,” either. That being said, I truly enjoyed reading this book. Johnson is a fine stylist, his research is solid, and his understanding of Chinese culture refined. His explanation of the rise of religion in China today is very convincing. Moreover, his candor and respectfulness in dealing with his subjects makes this a very humane work, one that makes you care about the people he describes. In short, this is one of the best overall non-academic books on contemporary China and Chinese culture available in English.

Review

“A must-read...A literary, poetic, scientific, and musical treat.”—Seattle Times“Masterful...Eminently enjoyable.”—Los Angeles Times“Why can a song make you cry in a matter of seconds? Six Songs is the only book that explains why.”—Bobby McFerrin, ten-time Grammy Award-winning artist (“Don't Worry, Be Happy”) “A fantastic ride.”—New Scientist “Leading researchers in music cognition are already singing its praises.”—Evolutionary Psychology“Exquisitely well-written and easy to read, serving up a great deal of scientific information in a gentle way for those of us who are—or just think we are—a bit science-phobic.”—Huffington Post“Fascinating. Provides a biological explanation for why we might tap our feet or bob our heads in time with a favorite song, how singing might soothe a baby, and how music emboldens soldiers or athletes preparing for conflict.”—Associated Press“An exemplary mix of scientist and artist, student and teacher, performer and listener.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Daniel J. Levitin, a former record executive turned neuroscientist, pals around with David Byrne, Sting, Joni Mitchell and other celebrities in a book whose purpose is to define the six architypal songs of the human race. The chapters are titled for one of the six types, with an additional chapter for love songs. The content of each chapter is a haphazard collection of autobiographical anecdotes, interviews, evidence from anthropology, and examples from his and his colleagues research. Beyond straight forward declarations of what makes the chapters's song type an archetype , most of the material provides little evidence or even a compelling reason to be included in the chapter. Each chapter includes uninspiring song examples that seem to undermine his claim of significance. Mr Levitin apologies for this in the final chapter claiming the examples are provided for a common frame of reference and are not meant to represent the best of the genre. If great examples are so hard to come by, what makes these categories more than arbitrary? This seems most evident in the chapter on religious songs. When composers like Bach have spent their entire career writing religious music, is Leon Russell's Superstar performed by Carpenter's the most worthy mention? How is a study of Arcade Fire lyrics pertinent while Handel's Messiah mearly gets mentioned by name?Levitin stresses how little difference there is between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. He fails to show that the musical brain he attributes to humans is an important distinction.

This is an enjoyable, very interesting and thought-provoking book by someone who knows music from both the commercial/industry and scientific sides. Levitin advances a number of ideas, based largely on science, but which really amount to conjecture -- he doesn't posit them, but he repeats them often enough that it is clear that he really believes them. I found a number of these ideas to be plausible but not necessarily convincing. This is not a criticism, but rather to say that I have other ideas and/or am not so sure that his conjectures are right. Indeed, some of these ideas seem downright simplistic.More of a criticism -- though this may be a criticism of me, not Levitin -- is that he extensively makes references to contemporary popular music and musicians to give examples of what he is writing. Being raised on classical music, I found most of these examples useless.I haven't read it, but, from what I have heard, another of Levitin's books, "This Is Your Brain on Music," sounds like a better and more scientifically based book. I intend to read it next.

I loved Levitin's first book "This is Your Brain on Music". The "name-dropper" claim from some reviewers was unfair, because scientists instinctively cite every idea that was not original to them (I would know, I am one). Levitin clearly loves his new career and wants to share his enthusiasm with a wider audience. However, this book is thin on content and full of annoyances that most readers will catch. For example, he waxes nostalgically about the anti-Viet Nam War music and how it influenced political life in the Sixties and later. However, Levitin was still playing with toys in the Sixties! His views of the impact of music on the Viet Nam War are second-hand sentimentality. He also tries to comment on religion without being offensive. He suggests religion was displaced by technology and then quickly changes topic. I am sure most of his colleagues believe that, but they need to get out more. Most of all, you realize quickly that very few people had much input when he researched this book. He quotes Sting constantly, probably because Sting was one of the few people that agreed to be interviewed.I do not want to trash the book completely. His idea that music influenced brain development in Homo sapiens is original and clever. There will probably prove to be some truth to it, but clearly the cart is (at least partially) in front of the horse. It is still a thoughtful and entertaining book, but it pales in comparison to Levitin's first book.

Not nearly as good as "This is your brain on music". Although the core ideas are very interesting, the book should be much shorter. The author delves into too many and too long personal stories to go to the point.

Very interesting read.

A bit redundant at times, but a good read introducing the role of music cross-culturally.

Wonderful read! Presents a perspective on music that is expansive and fascinating!

Wonderful, interesting book. Deals with origins of music and relationship of music to the brain among other topics.

My Review: I read Moyes huge hit Me Before You back in January 2013 and I absolutely loved it. I actually gave it one of my rare 5/5 stars for the emotional rollercoaster that it put me on. So I went into this book very eager to read another book by this author and I will admit that the story surrounding art stolen by the Germans in WWI was the other reason that I had to pick up this book. This book is told using two different points of view in two different eras. Sophie tells her story of living in her small French town during WWI and Liv's modern-day story is set in London with a piece of art connecting the two. I loved learning more about occupied France in WWI. Seeing the day-to-day life of these small town French people and how they had to live alongside the Germans was very poignant. It was an interesting era and there were a couple of dynamic characters, namely Sophie.Unfortunately I cannot say that Liv's modern-day part of the story affected me in the same way as Sophie's. The only character I truly connected with in Liv's storyline was her quirky friend, Mo who was the only character who felt honest and believable. Everyone else seemed flat - especially Liv who came off as too self absorbed. I guess I just didn't 'get' Liz. Her character was one-dimensional and I couldn't whole-heartedly get behind her determination to keep the painting at all costs. The romance aspect was also a little too convenient to be believable.I was very torn about this book and had, perhaps, overly high expectations after loving "Me Before You" so much. While the writing is good, the characters and storyline (specifically the modern-day London storyline) just didn't grab me. I found the ending too predictable with all of the loose ends tied up too neatly. While this book may not be my favourite I would still classify it as a good escapist read. But if you want to see Moyes at her finest please read her 'Me Before You' which was truly stellar. My Rating: 3.5/5 stars** This book review, as well as many more, can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) **

Brief summary and review, no spoilers. This book is narrated by two different women at different points in time. The first part of the novel takes place during WWI and tells the story of Sophie LeFevre, who owns and helps run a bar/cafe in a small town outside of Paris. The town has been taken over by Germans and the locals have all suffered from deprivation and oppression at the hands of their captors.Sophie and her sister Helene are both concerned about their husbands who are French soldiers and possibly in a prison camp or worse. Sophie's husband is a talented and fairly well-known artist named Eduoard, and Sophie's most prized possession is the portrait he did of her shortly after they first met. She has it prominently displayed on the bar wall. When the German Kommandant sees the portrait, he becomes enthralled with it and with Sophie as well. What will happen to Sophie and her family and to their town if the Germans don't leave? And what will Sophie do in order to save her husband and see him again? The story then moves to the present times and we meet Olivia (Liv) Halston, a woman who's been in a state of depression and grief since the death of her young husband 4 years earlier. Liv is struggling financially and emotionally but things seem to take a turn for the better when she becomes attracted to a man named Paul McCafferty. Paul works for an agency that tries to give priceless paintings stolen by the Nazi's back to their original owners, and when he spots Sophie's portrait in Liv's home, he feels he must take action.I really enjoyed the WWI parts of this book, which pretty much make up the majority of the first half. I thought this part of the book was stellar and I loved reading about Sophie and the descriptions of her life and of the conditions during the occupation were vivid and educational. My problem came when we come to the present day. As believable as I found Sophie and the decisions she had to make - I had the opposite reactions to Liv. I didn't buy into her character and found myself often annoyed rolling my eyes at her actions and thoughts. I don't necessarily have to like the characters to like a book, but I think we were supposed to like Liv and at times I just didn't. I also had trouble buying into the relationship between her and Paul.My biggest problem, and this is without giving away any spoilers, is that I don't like books that try to wrap up all the loose ends with a bow. I thought the book could've had a stronger impact without this and I thought there were way too many coincidences and convenient twists along the way.So this was a mixed bag for me; I loved the WWI bits but was frustrated by the present-day storyline.

I made a mistake when I started reading this book. I made the mistake of starting on a Saturday morning. Before I knew it, half of my Saturday was gone because I finished it in a little over four hours. I have loved each of the Jojo Moyes books I have read previously and she does not disappoint. This was a tale of two women: Sophie, who was struggling during WWI with her husband at war and then nearly a hundred years later Liv, who was still grieving the loss of her husband. I was so incredibly engrossed with Sophie's story. This author does a great job with historical fiction. Somehow I could imagine very clearly this small town of Paris in 1916 dealing with the occupation of German soldiers. But I had to take a star away because of Liv's story. I really wasn't as engaged and she kind of annoyed me a bit. I could not put the book down though because I was so anxious to see what happened to Sophie. I won't give away any spoilers, but I do think the author took the easy way out with that one. There were too many coincidences and twists that basically had everything wrapped in a neat bow at the end. I think it was actually too neat. But I loved the story and I love happy endings so I still gave this book four stars. I can't wait to read the author's other novels!
