Really informative, very cool to dial in on history and how to build dry stone walls.As I have 100s of feet of walls on my property,It is great to see them in a new light

You may think an instructive book on building a stone wall would be very dry, however this work is very easy to read. Some technique, some philosophy and generally just a fun book to read. You won't learn everything but you will have a great base of how to prepare yourself, both physically and more important mentally, for building a stone wall. Looking forward to more from Kevin Gardner.

Excellent book for building or repairing a dry stone wall with a bit of history.

Few readers will realize that the Yankee yeoman were not the builders and designers of those lovely, monumental stone walls of New England, but the First Nations! Lovely to contemplate!

I was excited to get this book, being from New England I was looking forward to having a stone wall book focused in that area. Unfortunately I was immediately let down when I received it. When I turned the pages I quickly noticed that there wasn't a single photo in the book! In my mind this is almost a crime, it would be like purchasing a book on sunsets and finding out there were only scattered black and white illustrations inside. Also, the most knowledge filled tidbits of information are quotes the author uses from other stone masons. I recommend their works instead; Charles McRaven's Stone Primer , and John Vivian's Building Stone Walls (a good mix of photos and illustrations, all in B&W, but less expensive than most.)

Of the half-dozen books I bought in preparation for recycling some of the old stonewalls up through the woods on our farm into a new retaining wall, this is my clear favorite. It is more detailed than John Vivian's Building Stone Walls, particularly when it comes to retaining walls. Because it is not as glossy and illustrated as Haywards' Stone in the Garden or David Reed's Stonescaping (which are, by the way, both excellent in their own right), I'm not as wary about taking it out to the project with me.The text is clear and concise, and includes a healthy dose of stone philosophy and the index is detailed enough to help the do-it-yourselfer find what he needs, but short enough so that he can find what he wants, even if he does not know the proper name for it.However, the main reason I like this book so much is Gardner's assurance that anyone who puts his mind to it -- which includes me -- can build a stone wall. While his respect for old stone walls and the art of building them is obvious, he also has a healthy dose of practicality. "The notion that all, or even most, of the old stone-work we see around New England is the result of concentrated applicaion of arcane skill," he write, " is demonstrably false." Once that sacred cow was out of the way, my confidence level went up and anything seemed possible.The black & white drawings that illustrate the text are clear and very helpful.

Of the 180 pages the 20 or so illustrations provide more knowledge on how to accomplish the particular task shown than all of the flowery text. The 8 page glossary is helpful also. After completing 80 or so feet of new stone wall and repairing several old walls I was hoping for some insight into some tricks and wisdom from an old grey hair, but very few are in this book. There are some nice references to some styles of some older known masons of the past but as for technique, you are on your own.

This first time I have purchased this series. I found it very easy to follow. The format user friendly. I have learned a great deal in the Office 2013. Whether new or season very good reference to add to your library.

Office 2013 has new features compared to earlier versions but no where near the radical change in 2010. I usually buy one of these for each new version and they always provide a good reference.

It has met my expectations, it is easy to follow and understand

This is a look inside the underfunding, overwork, and human tragedies that define the American foster care system. The book weaves together personal stories and practical information. Much of this information I've heard before- I've read a variety of memoirs about foster parenting and adoption from foster care. I knew about many of the inherent problems in the system. Still, I found this a valuable book, and the personal stories made it interesting.

As a former foster kid, I relate to so many aspects of this book. If you are serious about change in this system, you have to read this. No one has documented the struggle of foster kids like this book has. I could hardly put it down after reading the first paragraph.. Highlighted the entire thing. Our foster system is incredibly broken.. and perhaps even more tragic than the system itself is where it leaves us after we turn 18. I was put into foster care after several years of kinship care at the age of 17. My CPS worker told me the odds of me finding a permanent home was low because of my age. She was right. I hardly found a foster home at all. I was held in a mental hospital for a month and a half while I waited for someone to claim me. A mental hospital because they had no where else to hold me.. and 3 foster homes later I was put into an RTC - Not because I was a trouble kid, but because no one wanted me. I turned 18 with no one to turn to. I still can't drive and I have been in and out of homeless & DV shelters for several months. I have nowhere to go. So not only does the foster care system desperately need reform, but the aftercare system as well. I know far too many people with stories similar to mine. When will this change?

My 1 star rating might be unfair because I couldn’t read to the end, and I will potentially come back to edit if I ever find the patience to reach the end, but for now I’m sticking by it. I have worked in child welfare for years as a foster parent recruiter and as an employment specialist for 16-23 year olds in care in Florida. My husband and I hope to foster soon and in the meantime have served as respite caregivers. I could not read this after the author referred to our kids as “orphans.” NO ONE calls children in foster care, even those waiting to be adopted, “orphans” except for the church (which I do have a problem with and have worked with local churches to address). Also, I am a certified case manager and have never been told “when in doubt, yank ‘em out.” I feel like this book is sensationalistic. I realize it’s based in NYC, which is very different from Florida, but if you want an accurate view of what it’s like to be a foster parent I would highly recommend “Another Seat at the Table.”

As a new foster mother this is a must read. We have adopted children, biological children and now two foster children. I found it so interesting that the information was very relevant. We are in the midwest but this info on laws, aging out and vouchers are key topics right now. Thank you to the author for writing this book and making vital information a true page turner.

This book explores the larger issues, but illustrates them with individual stories of children in different phases of the system.Infants come with their own vulnerabilities, but also with the most options. As desirable objects for adoption, the rights and advantages of preserving the family must be weighed against the hope of a new permanent family. As the child ages, so do their options and the memory of the birth family becomes more compelling. Finally, a child "aging out" at 18 or 21, runs great risk of leaving shelter with no meaningful back up or preparation. They are less likely to be prepared for independence, and they lack that great American fall back of moving home.A society must be judged by its treatment of the least of its citizens. In this case, the outcome of our endeavors is vital to the whole country. It behoove sinus all to consider the facts and opinions presented in this book. The author's prose enables the reader to undertake the task with pleasure. The characters are fascinating and present conundrums that have left me pondering well past the last page.

The major success story in the book focuses on adults who live in a foster care lstyle group home, which left me feeling like it is only in adulthood, after the natural turbulence of teenage rebellion has passed, that foster kids or former foster kids have a chance of healing.
